Favourites Deliver In Dayton Friday Features
A pair of betting favourites, Currys Flurry and Boomerang, took care of business and each scored comfortable victories in the co-featured $28,571 conditioned claiming paces on Friday, Oct. 9 at Hollywood Gaming at Dayton Raceway.
Currys Flurry and driver Jeremy Smith left from post five and were able to cross over to the lead before the opening eighth of the mile, passing the quarter in :27.1. Rainrock (David Miller) started the outer flow as the field of nine passed the grandstand for the first time. The half went in :55.3. Currys Flurry rebuffed the Rainrock challenge and opened up some daylight from the pocket-sitting Charge Me Up (Luke Hanners) before the three-quarters in 1:23.1. The four-year-old son of Papi Rob Hanover used a :27.3 final panel to stop the timer in 1:50.4. Charge Me Up finished 1-1/2 lengths behind in second and Ss Druidstone (Luke Ebersole) closed for third.
The winner is trained by Walter Haynes Jr. for owner Bob Carsey of Columbus, Ohio. Currys Flurry won for the fifth time in 27 starts this season and was victorious for the ninth time of his career.
The Smith/Haynes combo looked to double-up just three races later in the co-feature with Rockinpoppin, but the 2-5 bettors’ choice, Boomerang, was too tough.
Rockinpoppin received the first call and led the field past the opening panel in :27.1.Chris Page had Boomerang sitting third on the rail but didn’t want to risk getting boxed in and sent his charge to the front before the half in :55.4. Inflation Proof (David Miller) made a front-side brush to challenge but could never get closer than the leader’s wheel disk. The three-quarter mile station was passed in 1:23.3. Rockinpoppin came out of the pocket around the final turn but came up a length short in 1:51.1. Inflation Proof photoed-out Johnny Up (Austin Hanners) for third.
Ron Burke conditions the Downbytheseaside gelding, a winner in three of his 20 seasonal starts, for owners Burke Racing Stable of Fredericktown, Pennsylvania, Weaver Bruscemi of Canonsburg, Pennsylvania, Knox Services of Mt. Vernon, Ohio and James Zito of Washington, Pennsylvania.
Dayton Raceway wraps up its race week with another 14-race card on Saturday, with a 4 p.m. first post.
