Ahle And Åke On Fire At Philly
Jonathan Ahle drove five winners from the barn of Åke Svanstedt as Harrah's Philadelphia reopened after a week dark on Thursday, Oct. 8, also adding another catch-drive victory to give him six successes on the 15-race card.
The quintet of Ahle-Åke winners were all stakes competitors who enjoyed the move to lower-class company. Three of them took lifetime marks — for two of them, their first — and all five returned $2.10 to win. Winning for the duo were Oneiromancer, breaking her maiden in 1:57.2, Nehalennia, also a first-timer winner in 1:54.1, Big Time Trot S, a Pennsylvania Sire Stakes winner who scored here in 1:55.4, Modesty Blaise, who took a mark of 1:55, and Rambo Hanover, who scored in 1:55.2. Ahle also piloted Clay Faurot Jr.'s Dillinger ($4.20) to a 1:53.1 victory.
Svanstedt's quintet elevated his 2026 totals to 111 victories from 507 starts for a 21.9 per cent win rate. The conditioner, elected to the U.S. Hall of Fame in August, also has victories in sire stakes finals across multiple jurisdictions to his credit this year, along with wins in the Bob Miecuna Trot and Dexter Cup. Ahle's six pack brought his stats to 103-for-981, and he is now sixth in the Philly standings.
Team Ahle-Åke had the favourite in the $22,857 Winners Over Handicap Trot on “Trottin’ Thursday,” Hustle Rain S, coming off of two seconds in his first two North American starts. Ahle sent his horse to the front, but he had to pay a stiff toll of :26.3, :54.2 and 1:22.1 for command. The Muscle Hill-Decadence gelding My Degenerate ($6.80), third in the Miecuna Trot on International Trot Day, came with a strong rush down the backstretch to challenge the leader, and he and the pacesetter were head-to-head on the far turn when Hustle Rain S lapsed from gait. My Degenerate thus got the lead, and pocketsitter Abruzzo (Simon Allard) avoided major trouble and was the chief stretch challenger, but Tyler Miller kept My Degenerate going to take the decision by three parts of a length. Resolve To Win (George Napolitano Jr.) was third.
The feature’s final time was 1:51.3, just two ticks off the Philly standard for four-year-old trotting geldings, set last year in a qualifier by Secret Agent Man, then also a member of Team Orange Crush. My Degenerate, trained by Julie Miller, is now a winner of $759,851 and 14 races from 44 career starts. He is owned by Andy Miller Stable Inc., Knutsson Trotting Inc., Little E LLC and Lindy Farms of Connecticut.
There were also two $19,285 conditioned trots for up-and-coming younger horses, one taken by the Ahle-Svanstedt combo. Rambo Hanover, a three-year-old Muscle Hill-Riding High colt, put up the panels and cruised on to a 1-3/4-length victory in 1:55.2 for owners Brochart Stable Inc., Ake Svanstedt Inc. and Al Libfeld. Yardbird (Patrick Ryder) was second, nipping Allioop Blue Chip (Troy Beyer) late.
In the faster split, filly Maya Patel Hanover was on the engine for Ahle and Svanstedt, but she was overhauled by two-holer Trillion Times ($8), a Tactical Landing-Insurrection Fr colt who lowered his mark to 1:53.2. The sophomore was driven to the quarter-length tally by Simon Allard for trainer Petter Engblom and owners Engblom Farm LLC and Kristen Bartlett. Chaprow (Brad Chisholm) was third.
The one sub-feature in which Svanstedt did not have an entrant was in the $18,571 fast-class conditioned trot. The sophomore Muscle Hill-Crysti Dream gelding Diabolic Hill had to face older opposition in this one, but after taking on the likes of Apex, Nix Nacken, Inexpressable and Big Ranger in his past four outings, the colt was certainly in easier. And Diabolic Hill went to the front and set the tempo before stopping the timer in 1:52 for driver Corey Callahan and trainer Annie Stoebe, the latter of whom shares ownership with Mario Mazza and AC Crawford Racing Stable. Hey Porter (Mark Herschberger) was second, 2-1/4 lengths back, with Im An Andover (Ahle) and Cadillac Moon (Troy Beyer) dead heating for show.
The Miller family dodged a second shot at a track record of theirs, as the 1:52 recorded by Diabolic Hill was just a fifth shy of the Philly divisional standard of 1:51.4, set in 2023 by French Wine when he was part of their roster.
Drivers Corey Callahan and Mark Herschberger had three and two wins respectively, and trainer Petter Engblom had a pair of successes.
Fillies and mares will be in the feature slots of Friday’s card at Philly, which begins at 12:25 p.m.
