Alberta Sires Stakes Extravaganza At Century Mile
Alberta-sired freshmen and sophomores took centre stage at Century Mile on Saturday, Oct. 3 as they clashed in 10 total Alberta Sires Stakes (ABSS) events, filling the card.
The two-year-old pacers had six second-leg divisions, with three $18,467 Alberta Lone Star splits for the boys and a trio of $18,767 contests of the Alberta Starburst for fillies.
Y V Michters ($4.10), off a victory in the ASHA Pace, flew late to take the second and fastest Lone Star division in 1:54.4. David Kelly piloted the Rod Starkewski-trained son of Captain Deo-Dime Hanover to a quarter-length score over G Ts Skibidi (Drew Campbell), with Strait Up N Down (Kelly Hoerdt) third.
Dungannigans ($14.50) used a front-stepping effort to win the first Lone Star dash in 1:57.4 for trainer-driver Nathan Sobey. The Winds Of Change-Wests Lucky Aria gelding prevailed by 1-1/2 lengths over Shark Edition (Phil Giesbrecht), followed by Dragonkind (Jamie Gray).
Somewhat Tipsy ($9.50) charged down the stretch from fifth and kicked two lengths clear for a 1:55 victory in the third split. Phil Giesbrecht trains and drives the Vertical Horizon-Mrs Suhwiggins colt. Scouts Command (Nathan Sobey) held second over Hanmore (Brandon Campbell).
Outlaw Risk N Hope ($2.70) was the fastest among the Starburst winners as the daughter of Custard The Dragon-Grand Slam Woman nailed Captain Tahiti (Phil Giesbrecht) by a neck off a pocket trip to prevail in 1:55.2. Shake Your Booty (Kelly Hoerdt) completed the triactor. Logan Gillis piloted Outlaw Risk N Hope to the third-division win for trainer Connie Kolthammer.
Miss Melanie ($17.20) sprinted from third-over cover to beat Dixieland Delight (James Jungquist) by a length with Criminal Intention (Kelly Hoerdt) third. Phil Giesbrecht drove the daughter of Custard The Dragon-P L Kaleidoscope to the 1:57 victory in the second split for conditioner Justin Currie.
Vertical Smile ($26) grinded down Blue Star Shania (Mike Hennessy) and held off the late-arriving Myartsdesire (Nathan Sobey) to take the first Princess contest in 1:58. Blue Star Shania held second, beaten a neck, with Myartsdesire third. Brandon Campbell trains and drives Vertical Smile, a daughter of Vertical Horizon-Yoga Pants.
Three-year-old males contested two $15,000 eliminations of the Alberta Plainsmen, while fillies had two eliminations of the Alberta Princess for the same purse.
Boleto A Mexico ($15.80) popped the pocket turning for home and powered to a 3-1/4-length victory in the first grouping for trainer-driver Jamie Gray. The Captive Audience-Legs Like Tina colt stopped the clock in 1:53.4. Outlaw Country On (David Kelly) was second, followed by Ruler Of Dragons (Phil Giesbrecht) and Mammas Faith (Terry Kaufman).
Y V Weller ($11.70) fired to command early and held off Vladdy G (Logan Gillis) by a half-length to score in the other elim in 1:54.4. Libra Mundi (Brandon Campbell) took the show spot, with Vegas Gangster (Mike Hennessy) fourth. Drew Campbell had the lines of the son of Mystery Chase out of Dime Hanover — marking two winners for the dam on the day — for Starkewski.
Lets Go Gals ($2.70) vaulted off a pocket trip to a 1:55 victory in the first Princess elimination. She was 1-1/2 lengths the best for driver Drew Campbell, with Y V Four Roses (David Kelly), Blue Star Aspire (Jamie Gray) and Chasing The Dragon (Brandon Campbell) completing the top four. Rebecca Kanak trains the winning daughter of Captain Deo-Twin B Breezeway.
Blue Star Strike ($3.50) fought off a resilient Terrible Custard (Mike Hennessy) by three-quarters of a length to take the second Princess contest. B A Dragon (David Kelly) was third, followed by Mystery Shooter (Nathan Sobey). Drew Campbell oversaw the Captive Audience-Lucky Lucka filly's 1:53.4 score for trainer Mathew Howlett.
The Plainsmen final, worth $53,600, and the Princess final, with a $53,900 pot, are set for next Saturday at Century Mile.
