Bettor On Than Off Takes Truro Feature; Crowe Crew Triples
After a quick start to Truro Raceway's top Winners Over Pace on Friday, Oct. 2, Bettor On Than Off powered past the pacesetter in the final eighth of the mile to steal the show on Friday, Oct. 2.
Driver Robert Laffin got a pocket trip for Bettor On Than Off in the $2,500 feature, tucking behind pylon starter Bronx Drifter (Carey Romeo Jr.) into the first turn of a sizzling :26.3 opening quarter. As Bronx Drifter blazed through a half in :54.4, Bettor On Than Off followed hot on his heels with the rest of the field losing touch half a dozen lengths behind. Bronx Drifter continued to lead through a decelerating third panel, passing three-quarters in 1:24.1 before Bettor On Than Off blew by in the final turn and went on to win in 1:54 flat by 3-1/2 lengths. Bronx Drifter settled for second, with American Risk (Kenny Parker Jr.) the best of the rest in third.
Danny Romo trains and owns the Bettors Delight-Lights Go Out gelding, who has won eight of his 14 starts in the his seven-year-old campaign. Bettor On Than Off, Truro's defending Horse of the Year, is now 24-for-80 lifetime with earnings of $45,465.
He paid $2.80 to win as 2-5 favourite.
Darren Crowe had a training triple on Friday evening's eight-race card with the maiden-breaking freshman gelding J W Flatout ($6.60) prevailing by half a length in 1:59.3, while sophomores Bet The Game ($3.30) and Couldofbeenthemoon ($4) took new lifetime marks of 1:57.2 and 1:59.4, respectively, winning by nearly 20 lengths combined. He drove all three of his successful starters.
Crowe, who is in the midst of his second six-figure season as a trainer, pushed his seasonal UTRS to a career-high 0.439.
