Formful Fillies Take INSS Victories At Hoosier

Fresh Face Yankee

Two-year-old pacing fillies and sophomore trotting fillies contested their final leg of the Indiana Sire Stakes (INSS) on the 14-race card on Wednesday, Sept. 30 at Harrah's Hoosier Park, with all four divisions won by odds-on prospects.

Owleos Pride, driven by Dexter Dunn for trainer Ricky Macomber Jr., went on a business trip around the oval to take down the $92,857 first split for two-year-old pacing filles.

Starting from post one, Owleos Pride rode the rail to the early lead, beating out her five opponents to the quarter in :28.2. The fillies taking the most play in the betting pool, Owleos Pride, Kountry Legacy (Trace Tetrick) and Fitterjake (Anthony Miller) held the top three positions on the backstretch to the halfway mark in :55.4 and three-quarters in 1:22.4. Owleos Pride cruised ahead by three lengths by mid-stretch, then came home a 1-1/4-length winner in 1:50.1. Fitterjake finished second over Kountry Legacy.

Owned by Jamie Macomber, James Stonecipher and Ricky Macomber Jr, Owleos Pride boosted her lifetime account to $321,790 following her fourth win in eight tries. The Jk Endofanera-Mcflirty filly was bred by Stonecipher. She returned $3 at the windows.

Era Dominance powered to a third straight win in the $92,142 second split for rookie pacing fillies for trainer Michael Hitchcock.

Leaving from the middle of the five-horse field, Era Dominance settled second for Joey Putnam as Jks Fast (John De Long) hustled along the outside, leading the group to the quarter in :27.2. Era Dominance leapfrogged the leader shortly after, and the top two edged away from the rest of their peers, racing to the halfway point in :56.4 and three-quarters in 1:25.2. Jks Fast tipped out turning for home and chipped away down the lane, but Era Dominance held firm for a three-quarter-length victory in 1:52. Jks Fast finished second, with Callie Rocks (Trace Tetrick) another six lengths back.

Era Dominance, a five-time winner in seven tries, is owned by William Hartt and was bred by Let It Ride Stables Inc. and J L Benson Stables Inc. Era Dominance, now a lifetime earner of $180,923, paid $2.20 to win.

Fresh Face Yankee continued her reign of terror over her division, wiring the seven-horse field in the $70,714 first split for sophomore trotting fillies as the 3-5 favourite with trainer Jay Cross in the sulky.

Leaving from post two, Cross was intent on gaining control from the outset, protecting his filly's inner starting spot and forcing For Dayze (John De Long) to take the pocket in a :27.3 opener. Fresh Face Yankee went unchallenged through middle-half splits of :56.1 and 1:25 before setting the stage for the highly anticipated showdown with For Dayze as the fillies straightened for home. The battle never developed however, with Fresh Face Yankee refusing to open the door for the chasing For Dayze while sprinting home well in hand in :27.4 to cross the wire two lengths clear in 1:52.4. For Dayze came home second, with Dial Nine One One (Marcus Miller) picking up the show dough.

Tim Smith owns Fresh Face Yankee, who has only tasted defeat once in nine tries this season with five wins in the INSS. Fashion Hill Farm bred the daughter of Crescent Fashion-Swan Yankee, who has banked $311,041 and won 17 of 24 lifetime outings. She paid $3.40 to win.

The $70,000 second division for three-year-old trotting fillies went to the slight 4-5 second choice Bluebird Kazoom and driver Jordan Ross, who capitalized on a pocket trip to win in a romp.

Bluebird Kazoom dropped into second from post three on the first turn with the 3-5 favourite, Help Cum Laude (Atlee Bender), taking charge in a :28.1 opening fraction. The fillies raced single file in the middle stages, with Help Cum Laude bringing the group to the head of the lane after fractions of :56.3 and 1:25.1. Ross right-lined Bluebird Kazoom at the top of the stretch, and the filly exploded past Help Cum Laude and trotted away by 4-1/2 lengths, stopping the timer in a career-best 1:53. Help Cum Laude was second, with Honeymoon (Trace Tetrick) third.

Trained by Henry Graber Jr., Bluebird Kazoom has won 11 of 14 starts during her three-year-old rookie campaign. Delvin D. Miller, Ken Bontrager and Daryl Miller bred the daughter of Swan For All-Stella Kemp, who has banked $273,019. She is owned by Hillside Stables, Indiana Stables LLC, Hickory Hollow Stables and Michael Rosenthal. The win price was $3.60.

Marcus Miller drove five horses to victory on the night to lead the colony. He won with 13-1 shot A Very Nice Dandy ($28.60), Sassy And Bold ($6.60), Instructor Bob ($5.60), End It ($3.80) and Gimmee Da Gelt ($4). He now sits fourth in the Hoosier standings and is 217-for-1,634 overall on the year.

Live racing continues at Hoosier Park with a 14-race card on Thursday set to get underway at 5:30 p.m. Two-year-old pacing colts and three-year-old trotting colts take headline the card with their final leg of the INSS in advance of Hoosier Champions Night on Friday, Oct. 9.  There will also be $10,000 guarantees on both the Late Pick 4 (Races 11-14) and Late High 5 (Race 14) on Thursday offered in partnership with the USTA's Stategic Wagering Program.
