Standardbred Canada is pleased to announce that, following the Ministry’s approval of amendments to By-Law 2, the Association may now register horses in the Non-Standard category.

This category allows Standardbred Canada to recognize and document the lineage of eligible mixed-breed horses while maintaining a clear distinction between Standard and Non-Standard registration.

Non-Standard Registration Requirements

Under Section 2.4 of By-Law 2, a horse may be registered as Non-Standard if:

• One of its parents is registered as Standard, and all transfers of ownership have been duly recorded;
• The horse is registered as Non-Standard in a foreign country whose registry has been approved by resolution of the Breeders Committee; or
• The horse is registered as Standard with a foreign registry approved by resolution of the Breeders Committee, provided that horses from that registry are registered with the Association as Non-Standard.

The percentage of Standardbred ancestry for each horse will be calculated and displayed on its registration certificate.

Please note that a horse registered as Non-Standard is not eligible to race.

Progression to Standard Registration

As successive generations of Non-Standard horses are bred to registered Standardbred horses, the percentage of Standardbred ancestry will increase. Once a horse’s pedigree reaches 87.5 per cent Standardbred ancestry, the horse may be registered as Standard and will be eligible to race.

The following pedigree chart illustrates how a mixed-breed horse can progress to Standard status over successive generations.

Standard Registration Requirements

Under Section 2.3 of By-Law 2, a horse may be registered as Standard if it meets one of the following requirements:

• The horse has a minimum of seven-eighths of its genetic inheritance from Standardbred foundation stock or from horses previously registered as Standard by the Association;
• The horse’s sire and dam are registered as Standard, the dam is registered with the Association or the United States Trotting Association, and all transfers of ownership of the dam have been duly completed and documented; or
• The horse is registered as Standard in a foreign country, other than the United States of America, whose registry has been approved by resolution of the Breeders Committee.

The reciprocity of registration between the Association and the United States Trotting Association remains subject to the requirement that an application for the original registration of a horse be submitted to the registry in the jurisdiction where the owner resides. Only horses meeting the requirements set out in Section 2.3 are eligible for Standard registration with the Association.

• L’un de ses parents soit enregistré comme Standard et que tous les transferts de propriété aient été dûment enregistrés;
• Le cheval soit enregistré dans la catégorie Non-Standard dans un pays étranger et que le Stud Book de ce pays soit approuvé par voie d’une résolution du comité des éleveurs et éleveuses; ou
• Le cheval soit enregistré dans la catégorie Standard dans le Stud Book d’un pays étranger approuvé par voie d’une résolution du comité des éleveurs et éleveuses, à la condition que les chevaux inscrits dans ce Stud Book soient enregistrés comme Non-Standard auprès de l’Association.

Le pourcentage d’ascendance Standardbred de chaque cheval sera calculé et indiqué sur son certificat d’enregistrement.

Veuillez noter qu’un cheval enregistré dans la catégorie Non-Standard n’est pas admissible aux courses.

Progression vers l’enregistrement dans la catégorie Standard

À mesure que les générations successives de chevaux de catégorie Non-Standard sont accouplées à des chevaux Standardbred enregistrés, le pourcentage d’ascendance Standardbred augmente. Lorsque le pedigree d’un cheval atteint 87,5 % d’ascendance Standardbred, celui-ci peut être enregistré dans la catégorie Standard et devient admissible aux courses.

• Le cheval possède un minimum de sept huitièmes de son héritage génétique provenant du stock de base Standardbred ou de chevaux enregistrés antérieurement comme Standard par l’Association;
• Le père et la mère du cheval sont enregistrés comme Standard, la mère est enregistrée auprès de l’Association ou de la United States Trotting Association, et tous les transferts de propriété de la mère ont été dûment effectués et documentés; ou
• Le cheval est enregistré dans la catégorie Standard dans un pays étranger, autre que les États-Unis d’Amérique, et le Stud Book de ce pays a été approuvé par voie d’une résolution du comité des éleveurs et éleveuses.

La réciprocité d’enregistrement entre l’Association et la United States Trotting Association demeure assujettie à l’exigence selon laquelle la demande d’enregistrement originale d’un cheval doit être soumise au bureau d’enregistrement du territoire où réside le ou la propriétaire du cheval. Seuls les chevaux répondant aux exigences prévues à la section 2.3 sont admissibles à l’enregistrement dans la catégorie Standard auprès de l’Association.
