Starship Glyde and Brookdale Layton captured the $6,000 P.E.I. Colt Stakes Graduate Series Grassroots divisions for four-to-six-year-old horses and geldings on Tuesday, Sept. 22 at Red Shores at the Summerside Raceway.

Starship Glyde ($3.40) took the second division in 1:56.3. Adam Merner declined a pocket seat with the 3-5 favourite, hustling him on to the top in a :27.4 first quarter. Starship Glyde then put up panels of :58.2 and 1:28.4, brushed off the first-over Good Omen (Paul Langille), and defended from pocket-sitter Bettim Alive (Jaycob Sweet) in the stretch for a quarter-length victory. Good Omen completed the top three.

Starship Glyde, a six-year-old son of Control The Moment-American Chocolate, took his seventh win in 15 seasonal outings and improved to three-for-four in the series for trainer Earl Watts and owner Windemere Farms of Springvale, P.E.I. He has won 23 of 69 career outings and earned $77,536.

Brookdale Layton ($43.30) pulled off the upset in the first split, getting up by a head over Dj Mustang in 1:56.1. He took point heading into the turn, then ceded control to Income Approach (Merner) for a garden trip through :28, :57.2 and 1:26.3 fractions. Brookdale Layton then charged up the pylons in the stretch, grinding past Income Approach and holding off the late-charging Dj Mustang (Ryan Desroche). Income Approach finished third.

Ken Murphy drove Brookdale Layton for trainer Phil Sizer and owners Doug Polley Jr. and Doug Polley Sr., of Amherst, N.S. The four-year-old Hes Watching-Brookdale Shadow gelding won for the sixth time in 20 starts this year and is now seven-for-29 lifetime with $33,243 banked.

Air Force Hanover took command before the three-quarters and held off Malevolent to win Tuesday evening’s overnight feature. Gilles Barrieau drove the 10-year-old Somebeachsomewhere-Allamerican Cognac stallion to a 1:55.1 victory in Race 14 for trainer Ron Matheson and owner Woodmere Farms of Marshfield, P.E.I. Air Force Hanover ($9.30) finished a half-length ahead of Malevolent (Paul Langille), with Middleton Terror (Ryan Desroche) third.

The night’s biggest win price came from Woodmere Heather M ($58), who rallied from seventh at the stretch call to catch Dollys Sky (Jason Hughes) by a half-length in 2:00. Jeremy Baker drove the mare for trainer Luke Burke and owner Alanah Peterson of Orangedale, N.S.

Adam Merner led the drivers with three wins on the 15-race program. Chris MacKay scored a training double.
