After having a ball in his first career trip to Woodbine Mohawk Park last month, Dame Good Time returned for another open-length $44,000 Open Trot victory on Sunday, Sept. 20.

The five-year-old gelding found himself a gapped third after Osceola (Louis-Philippe Roy) strung out a frontward-bound Major Velocity (Trevor Henry) as the latter trotted to the lead in a :27.4 first split. Doug McNair used the space behind the pocket-sitter to gather steam with Dame Good Time and launched him to the top nearing the midpoint in :55.3. Dame Good Time rolled through three-quarters in 1:24.1, kicked away from Major Velocity at the top of the stretch, and produced the field’s fastest last quarter of :26.4 to finish clear by 3-1/2 lengths in 1:51. Major Velocity was second. Amigo Volo (James MacDonald) reached home third after moving uncovered from fifth on the far turn.

Dame Good Time, a 2024 Kentucky champion, has been one of the top open trotters in Pennsylvania this season with two conditioned wins at Harrah’s Philadelphia and three victories in the Winners Over at Pocono Downs. He made his Mohawk debut on Aug. 22, winning the Open, then returned to Pocono for a top-level score before another trip north for Sunday’s tally. Gregg McNair has trained the son of Chapter Seven-Dame Du Lac in his Canadian starts for owner-breeder John Cummins of Lexington, Ky. Dame Good Time is seven-for-10 this year and 15-for-40 lifetime with $971,701 in earnings. He paid $2.80 to win.

Four $30,000 Ontario Sires Stakes Grassroots divisions of the fifth leg for two-year-old trotters were also contested on the card.

Stormont Violet ($4.10) rocketed off a third-over trip to take the first division for fillies by a length. Tyler Borth oversaw the 1:56 performance by the Alarm Detector-Stormont Contessa miss for trainer Kevin Benn.

Elusive Station ($7.60) pushed uncovered out of fifth to the lead on the last turn and glided to a 1:56.4 tally in the other filly division. The daughter of King Of The North-Elegant Mermaid was 2-1/2 lengths the best for driver Louis-Philippe Roy and trainer Chantal Mitchell.

King Of The South ($5) was responsible for the fastest Grassroots mile as he powered home to take the second division for colts and geldings by 1-3/4 lengths in 1:55. Trevor Henry piloted the Scott McEneny-trained son of King Of The North-Pink Fringes.

Balius ($4.10) grinded first-over into the last turn and battled to a three-quarter-length victory in 1:56.1 in the other split for males. Roy was in the sulky behind the Muscle Mass-Windsong Nolwenn gelding for trainer Dave Menary.
