Ricky Resolve, P L Ozzy Preferred Winners At Kawartha

P L Ozzy

Ricky Resolve persisted after coming uncovered, and P L Ozzy charged from the backfield as each captured the $7,000 Preferred feature for their gait on Saturday, Sept. 19 at Kawartha Downs.

In the trot, Reg Gassien dropped Ricky Resolve out of an early scramble for the front, settling away fifth as Insanity (Dale Spence) muscled between two opponents to claim the advantage going to a :26.4 first quarter. Early leaver R Royal Port (Jimmy Gagnon) was left parked out, and Ricky Resolve latched onto that cover through a :56 half and onto the backstretch.

Ricky Resolve tipped out as R Royal Port neared the lead, and those two raced atop the field through three-quarters in 1:24.4 with the former now first-over and Royalty Beer (Gord Brown) on his back. Ricky Resolve finished off a weary R Royal Port in the stretch, then defended from the late flurry of Royalty Beer to prevail by a head in 1:55.1. Truffles Too (Mark Etsell) finished third.

Ricky Resolve recorded his second victory of the year in 16 starts. The Mark Johnson-trained seven-year-old Resolve-Featured Image gelding is now 17-for-102 lifetime and has earned $246,453 for owner-breeder Denise Ball of Ballieboro, Ont. He paid $2.50 as the 1-5 favourite.

P L Ozzy rallied off hot fractions to win the Kawartha Preferred Pace for the second time in his last three starts. Rough-gaited from the second-tier post nine, P L Ozzy started seventh as Larry Karr (Paul MacKenzie) overpowered Gypsy Joe (William Roy) with :25.4 early speed to take command from post seven. Nick Boyd tipped P L Ozzy third-over nearing a :55 half as three horses from the backfield pushed towards the leaders, who went to battle as Gypsy Joe popped the pocket going to three-quarters in 1:23.4. P L Ozzy went three-wide down the backstretch and circled horses around the last turn, then rumbled past Larry Karr and fended off fellow closer Arties Ideal (Gassien) to win by a head in 1:54.1. Jj Xavier (Mike Healey) reached up for third.

Leading trainer Amanda Riley campaigns P L Ozzy, who is now six-for-15 this season for owners Bryn Campbell of Port Hope, Ont. and Barry McClennan of Cavan, Ont. The eight-year-old Sunshine Beach-Taylorlane Action stallion has won 38 of 130 starts lifetime and earned $418,092. He paid $6.20 to win.
