Brookdale Johnny made a powerful move to the lead en route to victory in the $6,600 Preferred Pace, providing driver Paul Langille the highlight of his five-win effort on the Tuesday, Sept. 15 card Red Shores at the Summerside Raceway.

Brookdale Johnny ($3.80) advanced from fourth after the :26.4 opening quarter laid down by Doc Awesome (Landon Campbell), then took control at the :56 half and opened up a two-length advantage heading to the three-quarters of 1:25.4. The six-year-old son of Rockin In Heaven-Brookdale Gia stopped the clock in 1:54.1 for trainer Phil Sizer and owners Doug Polley Sr., and Doug Polley Jr., of Amherst, N.S. Doc Awesome was second, 1-3/4 lengths back, followed by Sauble Attack (Ken Murphy).

Brookdale Johnny scored his third straight win and fifth of the season in 14 starts. He has earned $193,196 and won 29 races in 134 career outings.

Langille dominated the 14-dash program with five driving victories, including three straight wins in Races 9 through 11.

Malevolent ($2.20) delivered the fastest mile of the evening for trainer-driver Langille in Race 9. The four-year-old Malicious-Lady Kelleigh Anne gelding made a sweeping move from sixth to take command at the three-quarter pole and paced home in 1:54.4 for owners Debbie Francis of Sweets Corner, N.S. and Rosanne Langille of Lower Onslow, N.S. Freemans Legacy (Jaycob Sweet) was second while Howmac Maximus (Jeremy Baker) completed the triactor.

Howmac Charmer ($4) won Race 10 in 1:56.1 for Langille, trainer Kyle Williams and owner Doug Williams of Guelph, Ont., followed by another Langille win in Race 11 as Disko Bay ($2.60) controlled every fraction before drawing away in 1:56.4. Langille also trains the colt for Nikway Farms of St. Davids, N.L. His other victory came aboard Brookdale Thomas ($8.20) in Race 6 as the Sizer trainee prevailed in 1:58 for the Polleys. Langille has 100 wins this season from 561 starts and leads the Summerside standings with 45 tallies, nine ahead of second-placed Corey MacPherson.

Driver Jaycob Sweet tripled on the program, starting with his trainee Timberlea Lady ($18.10) in 1:57.3 for Timberlea Standardbreds of Alberton, P.E.I. in the first race. Sweet returned to the winner’s circle in Race 2 with Bettim Goodnready ($20.10). The two-year-old colt broke his maiden in 2:02 for trainer George Rennison and owners Jeff Lilley and Blair MacLauchlan of Charlottetown, P.E.I., Danny Purcell of Upper Burlington, N.S. and Gary Fraser of Martock Windsor, N.S. Sweet completed his driving triple with his own trainee Hawkish Deo ($6.60), who won Race 7 in 2:00.1, also for Timberlea Standardbreds.

In the second race, Our Tribal Chief fell to the racetrack and unseated driver Keith Legge while rounding the third turn. The two-year-old colt walked off the track and was not injured in the mishap. Legge reported back to the paddock and was assessed by medical personnel, then taken to Prince County Hospital, where he was diagnosed with a sprained ankle. Legge booked off his remaining drives on the program.

National Caretakers Appreciation Day, presented by Standardbred Canada and supported by Red Shores and the Prince Edward Island Harness Racing Industry Association, was also celebrated during the program.
