Terrible Custard and Outlaw Country On came from off the pace to win their respective stakes events for Alberta-sired three-year-old pacers during the meet-finale card at Century Downs on Saturday, Aug. 29.

Terrible Custard tallied her fourth consecutive stakes-level victory in the Alberta Marquis for fillies. Away sixth from the second tier, Mike Hennessy pulled Terrible Custard before the :28.1 quarter to latch onto the cover of the hung-out Y V Four Roses (Logan Gillis). The filly rode the tow past the half in :58.1 and onto the backstretch, where she charged three-high and overpowered pacesetter B A Dragon (Phil Giesbrecht) at three-quarters in 1:25.3. Terrible Custard was never in danger down the lane and cruised to victory by 1-1/2 lengths in 1:55. Blue Star Strike (Drew Campbell) marched for second, followed by a closing Lets Go Gals (Rod Therres).

The winning daughter of Custard The Dragon-Remember Terror notched the sixth win in 14 starts in her sophomore campaign, bringing her record to seven-for-22 lifetime with $130,294 in earnings. Her current four-race streak includes wins in the Gord and Illa Rumpel Memorial final and elimination and her elim for the Alberta Marquis. Rod Hennessy trains Terrible Custard for owner-breeder Lorne Duffield of Edmonton, Alta. The win price was $3.40.

Outlaw Country On was well back from wicked early fractions and delivered an eye-catching uncovered rally to upset in the Alberta Maverick for colts and geldings. David Kelly dropped the colt in eighth while Y V Weller (Drew Campbell) used :27.3 speed to secure the lead and was pressured to a :55.4 half by longshot Mr Jeter (Kelly Hoerdt). Outlaw Country On started his move down the backstretch, shifting onto the back of The Great Shark (Rod Therres) while evading the plummeting Mr Jeter before slipping out three-wide into the last turn.

The pocket pop of Boleto A Mexico (Brandon Campbell) kept the tempo sharp to three-quarters in 1:24.3, and that foe was ripe for the picking as Outlaw Country On entered the fray on the bend. Outlaw Country On forged ahead in the stretch, and favourite Ruler Of Dragons (Phil Giesbrecht) was too late as the former completed the victory in a career-best 1:54.2. The latter was 1-1/4 lengths back in second, with Boleto A Mexico third.

Outlaw Country On has won five of 15 starts in his debut season for trainer Rod Starkewski. Starkewski shares in ownership of the colt, now with earnings of $76,157, with Clauzette Byckal of Onoway, Alta. The winner returned $59.50.

Outlaw Game On got home off a pocket trip to take the undercard feature, the $15,000 Preferred Pace. Mike Hennessy tucked the gelding in behind Ernesto Delacruz (Jean-Francois Gagne) for the garden trip through :26.4, :55.2 and 1:23 fractions. Locked in the pocket by the first-up Needabankloan (David Kelly) turning for home, Outlaw Game On shot up the passing lane in the stretch and out-sprinted the closing Midnight Mover (Drew Campbell) by a neck in 1:53. Ernesto Delacruz held third.

Rod Hennessy trains Outlaw Game On and co-owns him with Duffield, Five C Stable of Cranbrook, B.C. and Jason Clouston of Okotoks, Alta. The son of Smart Shark-Sobia Hanover is five-for-20 this year and 14-for-70 lifetime with a bankroll of $159,635. He paid $5 to win.

Mike Hennessy's two aforementioned wins brought his meet total to 92 as he wrapped up the driving title. The 2025 Alberta Driver of the Year finished with an 18-win margin over second-placed Brandon Campbell, with Phil Giesbrecht finishing third with 72 wins.

Rebecca Kanak captured the training crown with 53 victories. Campbell, with 45, was also second in the conditioners' standings. Chris Lancaster tallied on Saturday's card to tie with Mathew Howlett for third on 34 wins.
