Downbytheseaside Fillies Sweep Ohio Sires Stakes
Downbytheseaside fillies won both $102,740 Ohio Sires Stakes for three-year-old pacing fillies at Eldorado Scioto Downs on Friday, Aug. 28 in identical 1:51.3 miles.
Sassy By The Sea and driver Tyler Smith took the first division for trainer Herman Hagerman. Leaving from post four, Sassy By The Sea led the field past the :27.3 quarter, :56.4 half and 1:24.2 third quarter en route to victory by a quarter-length over a fast-closing Estuary (Marvin Luna). Odds On Trickster (Luke Hanners) was third.
Sassy By The Sea, who is out of the Art Official mare Sassy Lady Art, is owned by Hagerman Racing of Mt. Vernon, Ohio and Charles Reeve of Broadview Heights, Ohio. After a winless eight-race freshman season, Sassy By The Sea now has five victories in eight sophomore starts, boosting her bankroll over $240,000. Three of her wins have been in the Ohio Sires Stakes.
The second division was won by the Ron Burke-trained reigning divisional Sires Stakes champion Seaside Shuffle and driver Chris Page. She got away third off the gate as Vanna By The River (Cory Stratton) took the field to the :27 opening quarter, but Page quickly sent Seaside Shuffle to the lead and tripped the beam in :56 for the half and 1:24 for the third quarter on the way to winning by three-quarters of a length. Sea Me (Luke Hanners) came up the passing lane to be second, with Vanna By The River settling for third.
Seaside Shuffle, who is out of the Santanna Blue Chip mare Hula Shuffle, is owned by Burke Racing Stable of Fredericktown, Pennsylvania, Weaver Bruscemi of Canonsburg, Pennsylvania, Knox Services of Mt. Vernon, Ohio and R A S Racing of Powell, Ohio. Seaside Shuffle earned her first Sires Stakes victory of the season and now has six victories in 25 lifetime starts with earnings soaring over $700,000.
Racing continues on Saturday at Scioto with a 16-race card starting at 5:25 p.m., featuring two divisions each of two-year-old colt and filly pacers and three divisions of three-year-old colt pacers. A bunch of activities geared towards families will be available for racegoers including Corgi races, a bounce house, a petting zoo, a ‘name the foal’ contest, paint-a-horse, hoof-o-graphs from Queenie the Shetland pony and a horseshoe-decorating station.
