Harrington Opens To Laurel Court, Speed Away
A pair of $31,250 Open-level events headlined the Tuesday, Aug. 18 Harrington Raceway program.
Laurel Court was an upset winner in the Fillies and Mares Open Handicap Pace for trainer Jay Gannon and driver Russell Foster. The five-year-old Nob Hill High-Odds On Hemera mare surged through the stretch to pass tiring favourite Stevie Hanover (Montrell Teague) for a 1:53.4 win by 1-3/4 lengths. Lil Miss Wondrphyl (Brandon Givens) was third.
Following her third win of the season in nine starts, Laurel Court, owned by Jeff Fought Racing and Brian Carsey, is now 15-for-73 lifetime. She paid $37.80 to win.
In the Open Handicap Trot, Speed Away overcame post eight with Corey Callahan in the bike with a 1:55.4 victory by 3-1/2 lengths over Somebody Special (Brandon Givens), with Vlahos (Cody Poliseno) third. Speed Away, an eight-year-old Father Patrick-All The Time gelding, made the lead past the quarter and never relented for trainer Nick Callahan and owners Breakaway Racing and Yorwollahan Racing.
The former Harrington Horse of the Meet continues to flourish on the half-mile racetrack with six wins over the track this year. He now has 31 career wins from 119 starts and is seven-for-20 overall this year. The win price was $11.
Driver Brandon Givens continued to have the hot hand with a four-win night on the 12-race card, after winning seven races Monday.
Live racing will return next week on Aug. 24 and Aug. 25 before the resumption of a three-day schedule on Aug. 31, continuing through Oct. 21. Post time is 4:30 p.m.
