Mike Hennessy was a frequent visitor to the winner’s circle at The Track On 2 on Sunday, Aug. 16 as the reinsman drove five of the day’s nine winners.

The leading driver over the last two years at The Track On 2, Hennessy swept the early double. He was shuffled back to fifth down the back with Wrangler Katrina ($18.10), but the inside path opened for the Kelly Hoerdt-trained filly, who charged to a 1:57.2 maiden score. He found himself in a similar situation on the final turn of the second race, a $3,800 division of The Track On 2 Claiming Series, but this time shifted Dillon James ($2.60) outside for the stretch drive to get him up late for the 1:54.1 win. Rebecca Kanak conditioned the gelding.

Hennessy went back-to-back in the sixth and seventh races, first mobilizing Stainless Steel ($3.40) out from the pocket on the far bend, and the Richard Lancaster-trained gelding vaulted to the front to score in 1:55.2. The Lacombe resident then had Hazels Hazelnut ($4.40) in front all the way to win the seventh in 1:54.3 for trainer Darren Callaghan. Hennessy completed his five-pack in the finale with a second-over 1:57 win with the Lancaster-conditioned Easy Money Maker ($14.20).

Hennessy extended his seasonal lead in the drivers’ standings to 10 over Kelly Hoerdt, Phil Giesbrecht and Drew Campbell. He was the top pilot of the spring meet at The Track On 2 and has amassed 116 wins across all tracks this year from 517 starts.

Jus Ched ($3.50) took the other claiming series division for males in 1:56 with David Kelly aboard for trainer Richard Schneider. Avas Angel Baby ($3.20) matched that clocking in the sole split for fillies and mares for driver Drew Campbell and trainer Rebecca Kanak. Both scored repeat victories in the series after joining for leg two last week.
