The fifth installment in the Whoomp-versus-Somemore-Blue saga went to Whoomp, who took down her arch-rival in the $129,861 Indiana Sire Stakes for three-year-old pacing fillies at Hoosier Park on Saturday, Aug. 15.

Whoomp, driven by John De Long, shot out of post five while being matched by Somemore Blue (Marcus Miller) from post two, and they opened up four lengths on the rest of the five-horse field early. Somemore Blue's inside positioning forced Whoomp to drop in the pocket and follow her foe, who won the last confrontation between the two on July 24, through the first fraction in :25.4. The early excitement dissipated on the backstretch as the field remained unchanged to the half-mile mark in :55.1 and three-quarters in 1:23.4. Whoomp tracked the leader through the last turn, pulled off the pylons in the stretch, and steamrolled past Somemore Blue with a :25.3 last quarter to win by 1-1/2 lengths in 1:49.3. Its My Story (Brandon Bates) was third, eight lengths behind the winner.

Whoomp snagged her fourth win of the year in six starts and now leads Somemore Blue 3-2 in their head-to-head matchup this season. The daughter of Rockin Image-Nightcap has earned $782,208 and won 12 times in 19 starts. Roger Welch trains the filly for William, Patrick and Jesse De Long. The win price was $3.20.

Flagman reached up from the pocket and nailed the favourite at the wire to win the $30,556 Open Handicap Trot.

Flagman, away from the rail, accepted the two-hole behind favoured Ponda Jet (Kyle Wilfong), who soared to the early advantage in a :27 first panel. Ponda Jet cemented his lead onto the backstretch, with the trotters following the pacesetter single-file to a :55.4 half. Flagman maintained the pocket through three-quarters in 1:24.2, then shifted out in the lane and chipped away at Ponda Jet to strike at the wire in 1:52.1 by a neck. Finite (John De Long) rallied for show.

The Guccio-Magic Lindy gelding Flagman is owned by Maryann Plano and trained by Rick Plano. He secured his third victory of the season in 17 outings. The nine-year-old increased his lifetime earnings to $1,005,512 and his record to 48-for-179. Flagman paid $22.60 to win.

Live racing resumes next week on Tuesday at Hoosier Park with a 14-race card featuring the traditional $10,000 guaranteed Late Pick 4 and the $10,000 guaranteed Late Hoosier High 5 done in partnership with the USTA’s Strategic Wagering Program.
