Undefeated Unstable Genius set a 1:53 Ontario Sires Stakes record for two-year-old trotting colts and geldings while winning the $150,000 Ontario Sires Stakes Gold Leg 3 event for his division on Friday, Aug. 14 at Woodbine Mohawk Park.

The gelded son of Muscle Mass out of Pretty Crafty is now a perfect three-for-three in his career, with all three wins in $150,000 OSS Gold events to push his career earnings to $225,000.

The mile was nearly a full second faster than the previous OSS record of 1:53.4 set by You Got It Kemp in 2024 at Mohawk. It also matched the track and Canadian record for a two-year-old gelding on the trot set by Gaines Hanover in 2022 at Mohawk.

“I've been pretty excited about [Unstable Genius] for a long time," said winning trainer Dave Menary in a post-race interview. "Prior to qualifying, he kind of gave me the 'whooo!' I haven't had that in a while, and he hasn't let us down yet. So, I’m hoping things keep going in the right direction.”

Sent off as the 1-5 favourite in the field of seven, James MacDonald eased Unstable Genius off the gate and sat gapped out in third through the early going as Kountry Cantab (Trevor Henry) led the field to the :27 quarter-mile pole, followed by Grand Manalishi (Tyler Jones). MacDonald had Unstable Genius out and moving up the backstretch, reeling in the leaders and reaching the front before the :55.4 half-mile station. Unstable Genius continued to front the field, followed by Kountry Cantab and Grand Manalishi, through the 1:25 three-quarters then pulled away from his competition in the stretch to win by four lengths. The late-closing Three Six Zero (Jody Jamieson) took second while Kountry Cantab settled for third.

The record mile followed a three-week layoff for Unstable Genius.

“I thought being off three weeks he may be a little bit short by our standards, maybe not short for a two-year-old trotter," said Menary. "But it worked out and [James] said he's never been better.

“We've raced him very easy so far and, hopefully, he's got good things ahead of him.”

Menary said he’s aiming to enter Unstable Genius in next weekend’s eliminations for the William Wellwood Memorial.

In previous Gold Series action in the division, Unstable Genius won Leg 1 on July 6 and also Leg 2 on July 24. Both races were held at Mohawk.

A $140,000 yearling purchase at the 2025 London Classic Yearling Sale, Unstable Genius is owned by Pollack Racing of Venetia, Pennsylvania.

Unstable Genius paid $2.70 as the 1-5 favourite.

Rebel Moon equalled the 1:53.4 OSS record for two-year-old trotting fillies while Verily won the other Gold Leg 3 division for the fillies contested on Friday's card at Mohawk.

Rebel Moon, sent off as the 2-5 favourite in a field of seven, picked up her second Gold victory on the heels of a victory one week prior in the Grade 3 Pure Ivory at Mohawk.

James MacDonald converted a perfect pocket trip for Rebel Moon behind 22-1 shot Simea (Trevor Henry) into a three-quarter-length score, with Major Contender (Jody Jamieson) closing for second. That gave trainer Carl Jamieson a sweep of the top two spots. Simea, who put up fractions of :27.4, :55.4 and 1:24.1, settled for third.

“She's just a beautiful filly,” said MacDonald after the race. “She's got a beautiful gait and she likes to go by horses, so that's always a good quality in a racehorse. Last week, we kind of went soft fractions and then Jody and I sprinted down the lane and [Rebel Moon] got the better of them and was really trotting hard through the wire. Then this week, it was completely different. We were rolling along, Dan [Lagace]'s filly [Simea] went a long way and I didn't know if I was getting by, so it was a little more of a slugfest tonight, but I’m glad she held on.”

A daughter of Muscle Mass out of Kiss An Angel, Rebel Moon is now four-for-six and sports earnings of $186,150 for owners Sarah Anthon of Fergus, Ont., and Ellen Ott of Buffalo, New York.

The 1:53.4 mile tied Rebel Moon with Bee A Magician (2012), Lil Sweet (2024) and Bingo Night (2025) for the fastest OSS mile in history for a two-year-old trotting filly.

Rebel Moon paid $2.80 to win.

In the other filly division, Verily and driver Louis-Philippe Roy, sent off as the even-money favourites in the field of eight, surged late in the stretch to win by two lengths in a career-best 1:54.1 clocking.

Song From Heaven (Tyler Borth) tried to go wire-to-wire, posting fractions of :26.4, :56.4 and 1:26.1 with both Treasure King (Jody Jamieson) and Queen Of Bs (James MacDonald) in close pursuit. Roy had Verily positioned midfield in fourth throughout, but got the filly in gear coming home. She tracked Queen Of Bs through the final turn then passed the front three horses trotting home in :27.2 to win. Queen Of Bs finished second while Song From Heaven edged out Treasure King in a show photo.

In three Gold starts, the daughter of Muscle Mass out of Yen has won twice while earning $83,250 for trainer Meg Crone and Delray Beach, Florida owner Bill Donovan, who acquired the London Classic Sale graduate for $85,000.

The filly, who rebounded from a miscue in her last start, paid $4.30 to win.

“She knows her business too well, kind of,” said Roy of Verily's break in stride last time out. “When you tip her off a helmet, she wants to go pretty fast. When I had to move her there in the last turn, she kind of wanted to go too fast, and that's why tonight I was keeping on the helmet the longest I could. Once I was in the stretch, it's easier for them to stay trotting. So, when I tipped her, she was all business and went by.”

In regular racing action, Open pacing mare Absolution was a repeat winner in the $44,000 top distaff class for driver Trevor Henry and trainer Jack Moiseyev.

Absolution topped a pair of Jacque Dupont trainees, looping early leader Ultimate Desbi N (Bob McClure) after the :26.4 opening quarter and going on to win by 2-1/2 lengths with Lets N Joy N (James MacDonald) giving chase in third. Absolution had put up middle splits of :55.3 and 1:23.3 before unleashing a :25.3 final kicker to keep her rivals at bay in the 1:49.1 triumph.

The homebred five-year-old McWicked-Bet Ya mare is now six-for-21 this season, matching her $198,680 earnings from last year. Her 17th career victory sent her bankroll over the $400,000 mark for owners Joanne Colville of Moffat, Ont., and Nancy MacNevin of Essex, Ont.

She paid $3.30 to win as the 3-5 bettors' choice.

Driver Daryl Thiessen swept a pair of $16,000 Pop-Up Series divisions on Friday night with Eternal Delight (1:50.2), trained by Austin McEneny, and Ladyterra (1:52), from the Zachary Carroll stable. This series is for female pacers that started for a purse of $11,000 or less in their last three starts, with winners over $40,000 in 2026 not eligible.
