The Åke Svanstedt barn sent out three winning sons of Captain Corey in Pennsylvania-sired third-round stakes action for two-year-old trotting males on Monday, Aug. 10 at Pocono Downs at Mohegan Pennsylvania, including the winners of both divisions of Pennsylvania Sire Stakes (PASS) events contested over a sloppy track.

Jimdougie Armitage, the colt out of Quick Bet who sold for $1.04 million and topped the second day of the 2025 Lexington Selected Yearling Sale, broke his maiden in fine style with a 1:55.1 victory in the $77,564 second split. Svanstedt, elected to the U.S. Harness Racing Hall of Fame last week, was in the sulky behind the winner, coming first-over and still able to win by 2-3/4 lengths over Dream Shaq (Mattias Melander), who had to rebound from an early bobble as he sought his third straight PASS win but had to settle for the deuce. Red Andray (Mike Parker) finished third. Second in a PASS event and third from post 10 in a Kindergarten leg before Monday, Jimdougie Armitage graduated with flying colours for the ownership of S R F Stable, Knutsson Trotting Inc., Brochart Stable Inc, and Svanstedt & Midnight Sun. He paid $3.60 to win.

Yankee Boss, out of Brigit Of Kildare, won the $77,008 first division in 1:56.3 over the sloppy track, reducing his mark from a previous overnight win. The “Boss” was the boss after making the lead past the quarter, with his only end-stage challenger, Big Time Trot S, losing stride in the stretch while close enough to contend and finishing 5-1/2 lengths back. Peanutbutter Toast (Mike Wilder) was third. Svanstedt drove Big Time Trot S, which gave the catch-driving opportunity to a top driver but one not often associated with Svanstedt’s horses – Jonathan Roberts. The longtime Mid-Atlantic star is part of the colt’s ownership of Kiwi Stables LLC and Graham Grace Stables LLC, who are also partners in the millionaire pacer Beau Jangles. Yankee Boss is now two-for-four lifetime. The win price was $19.80.

The other Svanstedt/Captain Corey connection was in the Stallion Series (STS), which was conducted in four $27,778 divisions to swell the day’s stakes money to $265,683. Hook N Reel ($2.40), out of Flos Conch Shack, added a second victory in the STS in back-to-back starts, with the gelding winning one of the three divisions contested over a fast track in 1:57.3. Driver-trainer Svanstedt is also an owning partner via Ake Svanstedt Inc. with Brochart Stable Inc. and S R F Stable, giving those entities a second stakes ownership win. Svanstedt also won an overnight race with Happy Jack B ($2.80) to end his day with three sulky successes and four training triumphs.

Captain Corey had a fourth stakes victory on the day and another STS credit in the fastest cut of that series as the gelding Strapped (dam Borrow And Spend) ran his record to two for three with a new mark of 1:55.4 for driver Tyler Buter, trainer Nicholas Devita and owners David Hamm and Glenn Phillips. He paid $4 to win.

The other fast-track Stallion Series contest went to the son of Greenshoe-Tuscany, Scarpa ($7.40), bringing Pocono’s leading driver Tyler Buter a second stakes win while the colt broke his maiden in 1:57.3 for trainer Nifty Norman, whose Enzed Racing Stable Inc. shares ownership with Melvin Hartman.

Friday Night Fats ($3.20), a Cantab Hall-Lovely Liv colt, also notched a second win in STS races, also in consecutive starts, with a 1:57.1 success over a surface which had gone to sloppy. Mike Wilder drove the Matthew Burkholder trainee for Dark Horse Farm LLC.

Pocono will be hosting the $1.4 million USD Pennsylvania Sire Stakes Championships on Sept. 7, Labor Day Monday. The best of this card’s horses are likely to be on hand, as will many performers highlighting the Tuesday 1 p.m. card, which has four $16,000 USD overnights for freshmen.
