Retired millionaire pacer Hyperion Hanover, the 2006 Western Canada Pacing Derby champion, passed away on Aug. 5, 2026 at the age of 23.

Hall of Fame horseman Jack McNiven reported that the special pacer passed suddenly in his paddock at Killean Acres farm in Ingersoll, Ont., where he had resided since May 2018 at the request of late owner Ed James before his passing, and came to be fondly known as "Henry" in retirement by his many adoring visitors.

"We'd have people come to the farm and they'd say 'when are you going to sell that yearling?' or 'what sale is he going to?' That's what he looked like. He was a Cadillac," McNiven told Trot Insider. "He wasn't a tall horse but he was built. And he was just everybody's friend."

Mainly trained by Rob Fellows and the late Jim McDonald, Hyperion Hanover had a long, successful career before retiring in 2015 at age 12.

A top Open pacer on the Woodbine Entertainment circuit for many years where he took his lifetime mark of 1:49.2 at age six, his career highlights also include winning an elimination and the $175,000 final of the Western Canada Pacing Derby at Northlands Park while in the care of Rod Hennessy, as well as an elimination of the Nat Christie Memorial Stakes at Stampede Park, during his sophomore season. Hyperion Hanover ended his career racing in Florida at Pompano Park, also winning against Open company there.

Owned by James' S S G Stables of North Boston, New York, the gelded son of Camluck out of U.S. Hall of Fame broodmare Hattie had a career record reading 52-49-44 from 301 starts with earnings of $1,274,413.

McNiven reported that Hyperion Hanover's final resting place is a shaded burial site on the Killean Acres property and the beloved pacer will be honoured with a memorial plaque on the fence of his former paddock.
