Scioto Hosts Rookie Trotters In OHSS Action
Seven $70,423 Ohio Sires Stakes (OHSS) divisions for two-year-old trotters went to post at Eldorado Scioto Downs on Saturday, July 11.
Chris Page piloted the fastest winner of each gender – the filly Envious Queen, who stopped the timer in 1:55.4, and gelding Iluvmymoni, who won in 1:56.3 — both trained by Steve Carter.
Envious Queen took the second filly split in her career debut. After leading the field comfortably through fractions of :28.4, :59.1 and 1:27.3, Envious Queen posted a :28.1 last quarter to win by 3-1/4 lengths over Miz Ella Paige (Sam Widger). Sweet Stevie (Kurt Sugg) was third. Envious Queen’s win came after three qualifiers for owners Hatfield Stables, Cass Gallagher and Carter. By Long Tom out of the Rc Royalty mare Royal Envy, Envious Queen was a $48,611 Ohio Selected Yearling Sale purchase from breeder Andrew Kauffman. She paid $9.80 to win.
Iluvmymoni, another debutante, forged to the lead in the stretch to win the second OHSS contest for males in 1:56.3. Royal Moni (Trevor Smith) took the lead after a :30.1 opener and posted middle splits of :59.2 and 1:28 before Iluvmymoni came up the passing lane to win by 1-1/2 lengths. Debt Free (Chris Lems) got up for third. Iluvmymoni, a gelding by Ready For Moni out of the Chapter Seven mare Iluvwineandroses, was an $83,333 Ohio Selected Yearling Sale purchase from breeder Wayne Weaver by Brixton Medical Inc. and Hatfield Stables. He paid $6.80 to win.
The other three colt divisions were won by Sigurd (1:57.3), Rolln In Moni (1:57.1) and Walks The Fire (1:57), the fastest two of which were piloted by Chris Lems.
Way Too Easy (Brett Miller) took the early lead towards the :28.4 opening quarter in the final male division. Next Generation winner Commanders Moni (Mike Wilder) then took over and led through the :58.4 half. Lems pulled Walks The Fire just as the field was heading to the 1:28.4 three-quarters, and coming down the stretch, Walks The Fire prevailed by a neck over Sweet Ts Ranger (Page). Way Too Easy was third. Walks The Fire, by In Range out of the Cantab Hall mare Can Can Frisco, is trained by Vernon Beachy for Trotters R Us and First Up Racing Stable. A $42,254 Harrisburg purchase from breeder Vernon Miller, Walks The Fire captured his first victory in his second lifetime start. He returned $8.20 to win.
Rolln In Moni finished gamely after a long uncovered trek to win the third colt split in 1:57.1, again for Lems but this time for trainer Scott Cox. Satans Fury (Mike Wilder) led the field through fractions of :29, 1:00 and 1:29. Rolln In Moni got away sixth and pulled as the group was headed towards the second turn. Steadily making up ground, Lems had Rolln In Moni eye-to-eye with Satans Fury midway through the last turn, and the gelding got up to win by a quarter-length after a stretch duel. Motor Earle (Mike Micallef) completed the top three. By Ready for Moni out of the Cincinnati Kid mare Ellens Lucky Roll, Rolln In Moni was bred by Ernest Ayers and is owned by Vickie Jennings and Brad Nowakowski. The gelding is now two-for-two. His win price was $4.
Sigurd, a new addition to the Sandy Beatty barn, won the first division for colts and geldings in 1:57.3. He got away sixth towards the :28.3 opening quarter before Beatty moved Sigurd and got cover on the way to a :58.1 half. Shortly after the 1:28 three-quarters, Sigurd moved three-wide to advance down the stretch and won by a 1-1/4 lengths over Jet Range (Brett Miller) and Turn Around Tommy (Lems), who were second and third, respectively. Sigurd shipped in from New York for last week’s Next Generation for owner-breeder Ann-Mari Daley. The Long Tom colt out of the Rc Royalty mare Zanna Royal took his first win in two starts. He paid $9.20 to win.
Kissme Ifyoucan won the first division for fillies, lowering her mark to 1:56 with Austin Hanners in the bike. Originally getting away second from the two-hole, Hanners quickly moved the filly to take over just after the :29 opening quarter. Kissme Ifyoucan led comfortably the rest of the way through fractions of :59.1 and 1:28, then drew off to win by seven lengths for trainer Todd Luther and owner Greg Luther Racing LLC. Lady Bountiful (Page) was second, with Rose Run Charm (Lems) finishing third. Kissme Ifyoucan is two-for-three following a debut win in the Kentucky Sire Stakes and a place finish in the Next Generation last out. The daughter of In Range out of the Malabar Man mare I Gotta Feelin was a $222,222 Lexington Selected Yearling Sale purchase from breeder Polly Hilliard. The 1-5 favourite paid $2.40 to win.
Rose Run Cybill capitalized on a pocket trip to prevail in the final OHSS filly contest in her career debut. Kurt Sugg watched from second as Next Generation winner Made For More (Lems) put up the fractions of :29.4, :59 and 1:28.1. Rose Run Cybill then closed down the outside in the stretch to win by a length over Made For More in 1:57. Lts Invitation (Brett Miller) was third. The winning Daren Harvey trainee was a $106,944 Ohio Selected Yearling Sale purchase from breeder Rose Run Farm. By In Range out of the Broadway Hall mare Rose Run Timeless, Rose Run Cybill is owned by Wayne Mast Jr. and Callam Racing LLC. Her backers received $8.
Also on the card, Regal Idea kept his hot streak going with a fifth straight win in a $24,648 conditioned event. He fired out from the rail but was overpowered by two foes to his outside and briefly settled third before swinging to the lead past a :26.1 quarter. Austin Hanners had him to the half in :55.1 and three-quarters in 1:23.1, and after resisting first-over Who Dey Nation (Tyler Smith), Regal Idea held off pocket-sitter Corporate Business (Chris Page) by a half-length for a 1:51.2 victory. Corporate Business finished second over Who Dey Nation.
Acquired by William Hartt and moved to the Mike Hitchcock barn in May, Regal Idea has won his last five starts while making two steps up the class ladder. The five-year-old American Ideal-Regal Wish gelding is six-for-19 this year and nine-for-59 lifetime. He paid $5.20 to win on Saturday.
Racing will continue at Scioto Downs on Tuesday, July 14 with a first post of 5:25 p.m. A Pick 5 carryover of $1,176 starts in Race 1 of the 16-race card.
