Governor's Plate Week Kicks Off Sunday At Summerside
Governor’s Plate hopefuls and the top pacing mares on the Eastern Seaboard will take centre stage as Red Shores at the Summerside Raceway hosts eliminations for both signature Governor’s Plate Week events on Sunday, July 12.
The Prince County oval presents a 12-dash program with a special 12:30 p.m. (ADT) first race. Governor’s Plate eliminations are featured in races 10 and 12, while the Ruby Chappell Memorial Open Mares eliminations line up in races six and eight. The top four from each elimination will advance to their respective finals, with Governor’s Plate Week 2026 being capped off with the $50,000 Governor’s Plate Final, presented by Summerside Chrysler Dodge, on Saturday, July 18.
The opening $12,500 Governor’s Plate elimination on Sunday is race 10 with Get Wings (To be driven by Marc Campbell) the top choice from post four for trainer Vaughan Doyle and P.E.I.-based owners Janet Kinney and Gary Ford. The four-year-old Bettors Wish stallion has recently strung together a three-race win streak.
He takes on eight rivals with Doc Awesome (Adam Merner), The Tulsa King (Corey MacPherson), Blood Money (Mike Downey), Bee Two Bee (Jason Hughes), Twin B Tuffenuff (Gilles Barrieau), Tony Too Tall (Keith Legge), Mappos Lion (Ryan Campbell) and Hellabalou (Paul Langille).
The second and final Governor’s Plate elimination is race 12, with Ammo (Marc Campbell) putting his undefeated streak record to the test from post three. Owned by Woodmere Farms and Pat Morris of P.E.I., and trained by Ron Matheson, the Sweet Lou stallion has been perfect in both his Island starts since relocating from the U.S.
Defending Governor’s Plate Champion Miki Shan N (MacPherson) has rail control in the field of eight. Other entries include Arbitrage Hanover (Ken Murphy), Bettor Than Spring (Brady Sweet), JMR Speak Away (Barrieau), Nuttin But Finesse (Downey), Trumpster Blues (Merner) and Fast Louie (Hughes).
The Ruby Chappell Memorial eliminations feature two outstanding groups of mares in the $9,000 splits.
Trumps Girl (Marc Campbell) is favoured from post four in the first division. The Always B Miki five-year-old has been splendid since moving East with a perfect top-three record on red soil for trainer David O’Brien and owner Tommy Collings of P.E.I.
In the second elimination, Lady Café Au Lait (Campbell) will look for her eighth straight win, and sixth straight on P.E.I., from post seven for trainer Earl Watts. Windemere Farms owns the four-year-old daughter of Big Jim with Matt and David Burke of P.E.I.
