Rookie Fillies Rise To The Occasion In OSS Golds
Queens Of Bs, Verily and Rebel Moon won their respective $66,666 Ontario Sires Stakes (OSS) Gold first-leg divisions for two-year-old trotting fillies on Sunday, July 5 at Woodbine Mohawk Park.
Queen Of Bs, trained by Matt Bax for owner Brad Grant of Milton, Ont., kicked things off with a gritty score in the first Gold dash on the 11-race card.
Longshot Simea (Bob McClure) seized early command in the seven-horse field and proceeded to open up a sizable lead in the early going. Queen Of Bs settled into second as Simea marched through an opening quarter in :27.4. Simea continued to lead the way through half in :58.4 with Louis-Philippe Roy, at the controls of Queen Of Bs, keeping close tabs on the pacesetter before moving to the outside to engage her into the turn for home. Simea repelled that initial challenge as Roy tucked his charge back along the rail ahead of three-quarters in 1:27.2.
A host of rivals then came calling down the stretch as a game Simea looked to fend off her foes. Queen Of Bs, coming up the pylons, wrested the lead away in the late going and held on for a nose win over the hard-charging Major Contender (Jody Jamieson) in 1:55.1. Simea was third by a neck.
The winning daughter of King Of The North out of the Conway Hall mare Win Missy B arrived at her second start off a runner-up effort in her debut on June 26 at Mohawk.
“This filly, since day one, she wants to do it and she definitely has the talent,” said Bax. “We added a head pole – she’s just so green. You could see that tonight. She is just going to get better as the year goes on as she figures out racing. But right now, she has a nice kick going home.
“It was pretty close. I didn’t think that she had it but thank goodness she did.”
Bred by Winning Key Inc. of Leechburg, Pa., Queens Of Bs was a $140,845 purchase at the 2025 Harrisburg Sale and has now earned $38,333. She paid $9.70 for the win.
Four races later, Verily put on a platinum debut performance in her Gold division.
Northernlights Glo (James MacDonald) blasted off the wings to take the early lead, followed by Fleetwood Dancer (Doug McNair), Flawless Lady (Paul MacDonell) and Karma Queen (Trevor Henry). Northernlights Glo led the way through an opening quarter in :28.1, but the lead was short lived as Flawless Lady, who left from the outside post eight, marched on to take over the proceedings before the half in :58.3, while Roy, piloting Verily, kept a patient hand with his rookie filly in sixth.
Roy sent his charge onto the cover of Outlast (Jonathan Drury) entering the final turn, and the duo began to pick up outside momentum. Fifth and rolling after three-quarters in 1:27.4, Verily was a menacing four-wide presence in mid-stretch but needed to collar Northernlights Glo, who had retaken the lead with about 100 metres left to the finish line. A relentless Verily got the measure of Northernlights Glo in deep stretch, besting her game rival by one length for the win in 1:55.2, powered by :26.4 final quarter. Fleetwood Dancer was third.
Bred by Overseas Farms Ltd. of Cambridge, Ont., the winning daughter of Muscle Mass out of the E L Titan mare Yen was making her debut after a pair of qualifiers at Mohawk, including a 1:59.3 second-place effort on June 26. Meg Crone trains Verily for W.J. Donovan of Delray Beach, Fla.
“I was very happy with both of [the qualifiers],” said Crone. "The first one (a 2:05.2 mile June 19) was just an experience of being here at Mohawk. The second time, she was great. Louis was really impressed by her.”
The filly was an $85,000 purchase at the 2025 London Classic Yearling Sale.
“Bill Donovan picked her out,” said Crone. “We went back and looked at her and we loved her. (...) We’re really excited.”
Verily paid $14.90 for the win.
Rebel Moon scored in her second career start in the final Gold division.
Jyn Erso (James MacDonald) got the first call off the gate and glided to the early lead, with R Rosie (Doug McNair) seated second and Rebel Moon third through an opening panel in 28.2. R Rosie was directed to the lead soon after and held a 1-1/2-length advantage over Jyn Erso after a half in :58.4.
Jody Jamieson then pivoted Rebel Moon to the outside and set the filly's sights on R Rosie before reaching the three-quarter station in 1:28.1. From there, it was a stretch-drive throwdown between the fillies, who matched strides until Rebel Moon finally wore down a gutsy R Rosie for a hard-earned half-length win in 1:56. Jyn Erso finished third.
Trained by Carl Jamieson for owners Sarah Anthon of Fergus, Ont. and Ellen Ott of Buffalo, N.Y., Rebel Moon arrived at Sunday’s dash off a fourth (elevated from fifth) in her debut on June 26 at Mohawk. She now has $34,933 in earnings.
“Last time, it was just her first start, so I wasn't really worried about it,” said Jody Jamieson. “I think her last quarter was in :27[.1]. She was perfect. She’s always been perfect. She's trotted great from the day we broke her. She’s been a sweetheart all along.”
The daughter of Muscle Mass out of the Father Patrick mare Kiss An Angel, bred by Jeff Gillis of Fergus, Ont., posted a pair of qualifiers ahead of her first start, including a winning effort in 2:01.2 on June 19 at the Milton, Ont. oval. Sent on her way as the 7-5 choice, she paid $4.80 for her maiden victory.
In other Sunday-evening OSS action, trainer Gregg McNair swept the three Grassroots divisions for two-year-old pacing colts and geldings. The conditioner won first with Atlas Ross ($6.40), who rocketed late off cover after a parked-out trip to win in 1:52.4. The son of Big Jim-Kisskissbangbang is now two-for-two lifetime. C Script ($3.10), a son of Sportswriter-Shark Hanover also coming off a victorious debut, marched uncovered to the lead on the last turn and sprinted home for a 1:52.3 victory for Gregg McNair. Yes I Am Hanover ($5.80) completed the trainer's triple as the Bulldog Hanover-Youaremycandygirl freshman soared to victory from third down the lane to prevail in 1:53. Doug McNair drove all three colts to victory.
Gregg McNair is the reigning Johnston Cup winner as the top trainer in the OSS. He is 50-for-324 overall on the season.
There were four Pop-Up Series divisions on the program, which were won by Ricky Resolve ($8.10) in 1:53.3, Nothingbutadreamer ($2.30) in 1:53.3, Luvutothemoonanbak ($14.50) in 1:53.2 and Nasey ($5.90) in 1:53.3. The series is for trotters that have started for a purse of $12,000 or less in their last four starts or have averaged less than $2,000 per start in 2025-2026. Winners over $50,000 this year are ineligible.
