Get Wings proved the boss of the top class with a front-end victory in the $7,000 Preferred 1 Pace on Saturday, July 4 at Red Shores Racetrack and Casino at the Charlottetown Driving Park.

Marc Campbell put the four-year-old son of Bettors Wish-The Captains Angel on the point in the feature through fractions of :28.4, :56.1 and 1:24.4. Get Wings then sprinted home in :27 to win by 1-1/2 lengths in 1:51.4 for trainer Vaughan Doyle. Arbitrage Hanover (Ken Murphy) was second-best, with Nuttin But Finesse (Mike Downey) third. 

Gary Ford of Stratford, P.E.I. and Janet Kinney of Wheatley River, P.E.I. own Get Wings, who has won three straight starts against top open pacers and is eight-for-22 on the season. The stallion collected his 15th victory from 45 career starts on Saturday and upped his bankroll to $184,140. He paid $2.80 to win.

Malevolent ($40.80) pulled the major upset of the evening in the $8,500 P.E.I. Colt Stakes Graduate Series Gold division in Race 11 for driver-trainer Paul Langille. The four-year-old son of Malicious-Lady Kelleigh Anne was away fifth in a :27.2 opening quarter, moved first-over with a rush to the half in :56, battled clear of Phil My Beer (Marc Campbell) to three-quarters in 1:24 and held off favourite Merigo Magic (Adam Merner) by a quarter-length for the 1:53.3 decision. Phil My Beer was third. 

Debbie Francis of Sweets Corner, N.S, and Rosanne Langille of Lower Onslow, N.S. own Malevolent, who took his first win of the season in four starts and is now 17-for-28 lifetime with $199,470 in bankroll.

Marc Campbell had four wins on the 14-race program. He won the first race with Shanghai Whiskey ($2.10) in 1:56.3 for trainer Wade Myers, the fifth with Dusty Lane Levi ($3.60) in 1:54 for Earl Watts, the sixth with Dj Mustang ($9.40) in 1:54 for Saul Lanigan, and the 13th with Get Wings.

Adam Merner had a driving triple on the card, winning with Redeyetoshanghai ($2.40) in the third race in 1:55.1 to double up trainer Wade Myers, Trumpster Blues ($3.60) in 1:54 in the ninth for David O’Brien and Rose Run X Con ($2.90) in 1:56 in the 10th for trainer Nicholas Oakes.

Brodie MacPhee scored a pair of driving victories with Pownalbay Andrew ($2.10) in 1:57.4 in the second race and Oceanview Lou ($5.30) in 1:56.4 in the eighth, both for trainer Tom Weatherbie.
