Ponda Jet Repeats In Open On Truncated Hoosier Card

Ponda Jet

Ponda Jet soared to his second straight victory in the $31,429 Open Handicap Trot on a weather-shortened card at Hoosier Park on Saturday, July 4.

Ponda Jet left from post seven for driver Kyle Wilfong and faced a host of challengers out of the gate, fighting three-wide for control into the first turn. Finite (Marcus Miller) took command passing the quarter in :26.2, and Ponda Jet kept marching to take control down the backstretch and lead to the half in :56 and three-quarters in 1:25.1. Finite and three-hole sitter Drink Up Drink Up (Brandon Bates) took aim at Ponda Jet down the lane, with the latter threatening with a late surge, but Ponda Jet held on to win by a quarter-length in 1:52.4. Finite finished third.

Ponda Jet, now four-for-nine this season, is trained by Jay Hochstetler for Connie Hochstetler, Robert Buddig and Allen Schwartz. The six-year-old Dover Dan-Pondas Lucky Lady gelding boosted his lifetime earnings to $1,022,142 with his 38th victory from 85 outings. He paid $4.20 to win.

The victory completed a sweep of the features for Wilfong, who also piloted Goo Goo Won to victory in the $31,429 Fillies and Mares Open 2 Handicap Pace.

Goo Goo Won left quickly from post five and led into the first turn with :26 speed to the quarter. Wild Rosa (Brandon Bates) was the closest to the leader as Goo Goo Won continued to control the tempo to the halfway point in :54.2. Goo Goo Won hit three-quarters in 1:23 with the first-over Anna Love N (Trace Tetrick) looming on the outside. Anna Love N reeled in the pacesetter through the length of the stretch, but Goo Goo Won held on by a quarter-length to prevail in 1:49.4. Anna Love N fought for second, while Canttouchthese (John De Long) rallied for third.

The seven-year-old Goo Goo Won is owned by Judith Taylor and trained by Ron Burke. She is six-for-15 this year while racing at the Open levels of Hoosier Park and Miami Valley Raceway. The daughter of Fred And Ginger-Malinka has 29 career wins and $598,349 in earnings in 119 starts. Her win price was $6.80.

Indiana Sire Stakes (INSS) star Dan D Man Can kept his perfect seasonal record intact as he closed to a lifetime-best 1:52.4 victory in the first race. The gelding was third through :27.4, :56.3 and 1:24.2 panels in the $16,429 conditioned event, then stormed home wide in the lane with a :27.3 kicker to tally his fifth straight win by three-quarters of a length over Late Nite Hawk (Jordan Ross). Toys For You (John De Long) was third.

Dan D Man Can is five-for-five in 2026 with three INSS victories for trainer Erv Miller. The son of Dover Dan-Caramela Hanover, owned by Red Barn Stable, Stepbystep Racing and Lava Java Stable, has won six of his 14 career starts and earned $339,705. He paid $2.60 to win.

The remainder of the 11-race card was cancelled after the fifth race due to weather conditions. Live racing will return to Hoosier Park on Tuesday with a 14-race program featuring the first round of the INSS for two-year-old trotting fillies with a first post of 5:30 p.m.
