Everlast Sting Deo Persistent In Philly Feature

Everlast Sting Deo winning at The Meadowlands

The Perfect Sting-Little Miss K gelding Everlast Sting Deo reduced his mark to 1:50.1 despite having to go first-over, winning the $19,286 featured conditioned pace for developing males on Sunday, June 28 at Harrah’s Philadelphia.

Mark Herschberger sat third with Everlast Sting Deo behind early numbers of :27.1 and :55.2, then came with his horse uncovered down the back. Everlast Sting Deo went his own third split in :27.3 to be head-and-head with pacesetter Moneyhill Gb (Troy Beyer) at the 1:23.3 three quarters. Pocket-sitter Easy Breeze (Eddie Dennis) made it a three-way battle through the lane, but the victorious three-year-old summoned a :26.3 last quarter to be a length clear of Easy Breeze at the wire, with Moneyhill Gb just another neck off.  Everlast Sting Deo is trained by Travis Alexander for Morrison Racing Stables. He is now four-for-19 lifetime. The win price was $7.60.

The meet’s leading driver, Tim Tetrick, put up a record of 8-5-1-1 in his Philly sulky action Sunday. One of his victories came in the faster of two $17,143 sub-featured conditioned paces with a 1:50.3 lifetime-best score from Pa Luke ($2.40). The three-year-old Papi Rob Hanover-Ravishnmasterpiece gelding, a Breeders Crown finalist last year, has now won two straight after making an early move to command and prevailing by two lengths for trainer Robert Cleary and owner Celtic Racing. Good Friday (Corey Callahan) finished second over Adonis Blue Chip (Simon Allard).

Tetrick also won the quickest mile of the day as Best Chip ($3.20) left little doubt in a lifetime-best 1:48.3 victory in the $18,571 fast-class conditioned handicap pace. He made two speed moves with the four-year-old son of Heston Blue Chip-Place Your Best, then tapped the pacer on the far turn, and Best Chip smoked home in :26.1 to win by 2-1/4 lengths. Young Bluey A (Andrew McCarthy) and Wish You Well (Corey Callahan) gave game-but-futile chase in finishing second and third, respectively. The winning late bloomer has won four of six starts since joining up with trainer Joe Bongiorno and owner El Dorado Stables two months ago.

Tetrick's other winners were Hugh Heston ($4.20), Allstar Cheddar ($9.40) and Bettor Not Talk ($3.60). He has 77 wins locally this season, good for a lead of 22 over Simon Allard, and is 225-for-929 across all tracks.

Twist Of Lemon ($22.40) also set a new personal speed record when he took the other section of the $17,143 class in 1:52.4. A three-year-old Captain Crunch-Lemon Zest colt driven by Johnathan Ahle, Twist Of Lemon followed second-over then went on to challenge his clearing cover, making the lead then holding off the horse on his back, Lous Rodeo (Mark Herschberger), by a nose. Calvin Hanover (Tetrick) was third. Twist Of Lemon is trained by Jeffrey Smith for owner Jeffrey Webster.

Doublers on the 14-race card were Mark Herschberger and amateur driver William Clark Jr., who trains both his sulky successes. The latter joined Travis Alexander and Howard Birney as conditioners with two wins.

Racing resumes at Harrah’s Philly on “Trottin’ Thursday” at 12:25 p.m., with Ari Ferrari J going for his third in a row in the $16,000 USD Winners Over Handicap Trot. If he is to do so, he’ll have to overcome the outermost starting slot for the third straight outing. There will also be a carryover into the fifth-race Pick 5 wager.
