Morgan Trainees Take Four BSS Divisions At Scioto
Trainer Virgil Morgan Jr. had four of six winners in the $28,571 Buckeye Stallion Series (BSS) events for three-year-old colt pacers on Saturday, June 27 at Eldorado Scioto Downs.
Morgan’s four BSS winners were Odds On Phil (Luke Hanners, $3.20) in 1:51.2, Odds On Sugar (Luke Hanners, $2.60) in 1:50.4, Tsunami Seas (Brett Miller, $2.10) in 1:51.4 and Odds On Rpj (Luke Hanners) in 1:52.1.
The lone victorious Morgan trainee not by the Ohio standout stallion Downbytheseaside was Odds On Phil, by Lather Up out of the Somebeachsomewhere mare Beach Granny. Owned by Odds On Racing, Odds On Phil has $90,476 earned in 13 lifetime starts with five victories. The 1:51.2 mile on Saturday was a new lifetime mark.
Odds On Racing also is the sole owner of Odds On Rpj, a Downbytheseaside gelding out of the Rock N Roll Heaven mare Odds On Ashley. Odds On Rpj now has five wins and $82,624 in earnings from 10 career starts.
Odds On Sugar is also owned by Odds On Racing, in partnership with Sugar Valley Farm LLC, Morgan and Operation Horsepower. The Downbytheseaside gelding out of the Badlands Hanover mare Laughandbehappy now has $154,327 earned in 14 starts with three wins, with Saturday’s victory coming in a new lifetime best of 1:50.4.
Odds On Phil, Odds On Sugar and Odds On Rpj each won their division of the first leg of the BSS on May 9 before moving up to the Ohio Sires Stakes for the second leg.
Tsunami Seas, the other Morgan trainee by Downbytheseaside, is owned by Jeffrey Rector, Larry Wills and Hutchison Harness LLC. The gelded son of the Riggins mare Foxy Rigger has earned $102,527 in 13 lifetime starts and won five times.
Morgan finished the 16-race card with five wins, with his BSS grand slam coming after I Did It Myway ($5.20) took the opener for the trainer in 1:51. The leading conditioner at Scioto for the past 31 straight years, he leads the current term's standings by 36 wins over Ron Burke. Morgan, who recently hit 8,000 career wins, is 136-for-604 overall this year.
Yacht Rock ($120.20) upset at 59-1 in the second BSS division in a lifetime-best 1:50.4 effort for trainer Tim Lane and owner Columbus Yacht Club. The son of Summa Cum Laude out of the Rockin Amadeus mare Best Place To Rock was guided to victory by Marvin Luna. He now has two wins in 15 lifetime starts and $63,429 in earnings.
Catch The Fire was the sire of the last BSS divisional winner for the evening, as his gelded son Brixs On Fire (Tyler Smith, $22.20) won in his new lifetime mark of 1:51. Out of the Pet Rock mare Maevynmarierocks, Brixs On Fire is owned by breeders James Everhart and Kathy Smith and trained by Jeff Smith. He now has three wins in 13 starts and $43,971 in earnings.
Bythemissal ($2.80) won the $35,714 Horses and Geldings Open Pace in 1:49 for trainer Ron Burke. Chris Page steered the seven-year-old gelded son of Downbytheseaside out of the Western Terror mare Dismissal for owners Burke Racing Stable LLC, Eric Good, Rich Lombardo Racing LLC and Weaver Bruscemi LLC. Surreal Ideal (Mike Wilder) was a half-length back in second while Clever Cody (Luke Ebersole) was third. The 32-time winner now has $2,825,025 earned in 63 lifetime starts.
Also on the Saturday card were three $21,429 divisions of the Buckeye Claiming Series for three-year-old pacing males with a $35,714 claiming tag. The winners were Lather Rock ($40), Bay Camo ($4) and Intogo Station ($2.80).
There will be a 22-race qualifying card at Scioto on Monday starting at 10 a.m. and three qualifiers on Tuesday beginning at 4:30 p.m. Pari-mutuel racing continues on Tuesday with a 15-race card with a 5:25 p.m. post time. There will be a $2,538 carryover into the 20-cent Super Hi-5 in the fourth race.
