Boyd Bags Five At Kawartha
Nick Boyd, 13 days removed from his victory in the Quebec/Eastern Ontario Regional Driving Championship, stayed in sharp form with a five-win performance on Saturday, June 27 at Kawartha Downs.
Runway Diva strutted her stuff with an 11-length win in the first $8,000 Prospect Series Leg 2B division for three-year-old pacing fillies to highlight the Boyd quintuple. She accelerated out of post five to claim command heading to a :26.4 first quarter and remained in control of a strung-out group past the half in :56.3. Her five foes could no longer keep in touch as she paced to three-quarters in 1:24.3, and she ran up the score with a :29 closer to notch a 1:53.3 victory. Showme Ur Kitties (Gord Brown) took second over Poisonous Delight (Ryan Guy).
The Tony Beaton-trained Runway Diva is now two-for-six this season after winning twice in her last three outings. The daughter of Betterthancheddar-Red Carpet Queen made her Prospect Series debut on Saturday for owners Beaton of Waterdown, Ont. and David Mercer of Westmount, N.S. She is now two-for-11 lifetime with a bankroll of $20,580. She paid $4.60 to win.
Boyd opened his account with Atlas Ross ($2.70), who went gate-to-wire in the second race in 1:56.4. He also won the sixth race with Tellit Russ Tellit ($2.10), who crushed his claiming rivals in 1:53.2. The Guelph, Ont.-based driver used a second-over trip to take the ninth with Mighty Mach ($7.90) in 1:55, and he closed out his night with a 1:56.1 victory by The Devil You Know ($19) in the 12th-race finale. Boyd, aiming to repeat as Kawartha’s top dash-winning driver, leads the 2026 standings with 11 wins, five clear of Gord Brown and Ryan Guy. He is 19-for-118 overall on the season.
Josies Joules ($2.40) took the other Prospect Series division. The daughter of Shadow Play-Village Joules circled from last entering the backstretch and drew clear to win by five lengths in 1:53.3 for trainer-driver Dave Kelly. Kelly co-owns her with Randy Smith and Donald McDougall of Calgary, Alta. Esmeralda Du Lac (Ryan Guy) finished second, with Kosmic Krisp (William Roy) third.
