Ammo, Get Wings Score In P.E.I. FFA Series

Ammo and Get Wings delivered front-end victories in the $10,000 P.E.I. Free-For-All Series divisions on Saturday, June 27 at Red Shores Racetrack and Casino at the Charlottetown Driving Park.

Marc Campbell, who had four wins on the program, engineered the winning trip behind Ammo ($2.30) in the second division for trainer Ron Matheson and owners Pat Morris of Charlottetown, P.E.I. and Woodmere Farms of Marshfield, P.E.I. The six-year-old son of Sweet Lou-Beach Gal cut fractions of :26.4, :55.2 and 1:24 before opening up to win by 3-1/2 lengths in 1:51.3. Arbitrage Hanover (Ken Murphy) was second with Nuttin But Finesse (Mike Downey) third.

Ammo is two-for-two since arriving in the Maritimes. The stallion, a 2022 Breeders Crown champion, won his Island debut on June 13 in the Cecil Ladner Memorial and has four wins from 14 starts this season. He is 22-for-93 lifetime with $982,289 in earnings.

Get Wings ($2.10) took the other P.E.I. FFA Series split with Campbell in the seat for trainer Vaughan Doyle and owners Gary Ford of Stratford, P.E.I. and Janet Kinney of Wheatley River, P.E.I. The four-year-old Bettors Wish-The Captains Angel stallion went to the lead at the quarter in :28.4, put up :57.1 and 1:27 fractions, and reached the line a three-quarter-length winner in 1:54.1. Merigo Magic (Adam Merner) was second, followed by Blood Money (Downey).

Get Wings has won three of his past four starts, with two Preferred victories and a show finish in the Ladner Memorial preceding Saturday's victory. He is seven-for-21 this season and 14-for-44 lifetime with $180,640 in the bank.

In P.E.I. Colt Stakes Graduate Series Grassroots division action, Redeyetoshanghai ($17.90) upset the in the second $6,000 split in 1:54.4 for driver Adam Merner and owner-trainer Wade Myers and co-owner Jack Matheson of Charlottetown. The win was part of a training double for Myers, as Redeyetoshanghai’s full brother Shanghai Whiskey ($2.30) won an overnight race in 1:56.4 in line to Marc Campbell earlier on the program.

Starship Glyde ($4.60) took the first P.E.I. Colt Stakes Graduate Series Grassroots division in 1:54.3 for driver Paul Langille as part of a training double for Earl Watts. Windemere Farms of Springvale, P.E.I. owns the winner. The conditioner's other win came from Gigis Dream ($4.30), who won the 13th race in 1:54 with Corey MacPherson aboard for owners Matt and David Burke of Stratford and Windemere Farms.

The other P.E.I. Colt Stakes Graduate Series Grassroots division went to Brookdale Layton ($4.20) in 1:55 for driver Gilles Barrieau, trainer Phil Sizer and owners Doug Polley Jr. and Doug Polley Sr. of Amherst, N.S.

The Tulsa King ($5.20) won the FedEx Pace in Race 5 in 1:54.3 for Barrieau, trainer Mike McGuigan and owners Josh MacDonald of Little Pond, P.E.I. and Mike Dicks of Wabamun, Alta.

The first two-year-old winner of the season on P.E.I. was Woodmere Rock It ($4.50), who was sharp in the fourth race for driver Corey MacPherson, trainer Jamie Smith and owner Thestable Woodmererock It of Guelph, Ont. The son of Tobago Cays-Musette Mindale gelding stopped the clock in a snappy 1:56.4.

T H Boomtown ($3.70) landed in the winner’s circle in the finale for Barrieau, trainer Matheson and owners Dr. Don Ling and Wayne MacDougall of Stratford. The gelding won in 1:53.3.

Merner drove two of his trainees to victory, winning with Maintenance Man ($4.70) in 1:54.3 for owner Brittany Watts of Springvale and a maiden score with three-year-old Al Ahmar ($4.60) in 2:00.2 for owner Tommy Collings of Mount Stewart, P.E.I.

The total handle for the 15-dash program was $143,851.

Live racing continues on Wednesday for a special Canada Day presentation at Red Shores Summerside with a 12:30 p.m. first-race post time.
