Lady Cafe Au Lait Rolls On In Aged Pacing Mares Series

Lady Cafe Au Lait

Lady Cafe Au Lait braved the first-over route to her sixth straight victory and remained undefeated on Prince Edward Island as she won the second $9,000 division of the Aged Pacing Mares Series on Thursday, June 25 at Charlottetown Driving Park.

She slid in fifth from post six entering the opening turn for Marc Campbell but was out quickly following a :28 opener and made up ground uncovered going to the half in :56.4. The mare’s charge rumbled on around the third turn, and she pulled within a length of leader Sugar Bowl (Brady Sweet) before that opponent went into a drive to three-quarters in 1:25.2. Sugar Bowl was assailed by Lady Cafe Au Lait to her outside and the pylon-shooting Windemere Saddy (Ken Murphy) down the lane, with Lady Cafe Au Lait racing a length clear in deep-stretch for the 1:54.1 victory. Sugar Bowl held on for second over Windemere Saddy.

Lady Cafe Au Lait is two-for-two in the Aged Pacing Mares Series and four-for-four at Charlottetown since shipping in from Ontario earlier this season. The daughter of Big Jim-Lady Latte won her last two starts at Woodbine Mohawk Park before debuting on the East Coast with a Preferred-2 win on May 14. Earl Watts trains her for Windemere Farms of Springvale, P.E.I. and Matt and David Burke of Stratford, P.E.I. The four-year-old is now eight-for-11 this year and has won 15 times and earned $238,152 from 48 career attempts. She paid $2.20 to win.

Trumps Girl, another recent addition to the P.E.I. distaff pacing ranks, won the first division with a similar drive from Campbell. The reinsman floated her out from post six and shopped for a spot rounding the first turn, eventually finding the four-hole while Redland Misspretty (Paul Langille) pocket-popped to lead at the quarter in :28.2. Campbell sent Trumps Girl, the 2-5 favourite, first-up coming off the second bend and guided her on a methodical trek towards the top through the half in :57.1 and three-quarters in  1:26, bringing her alongside Redland Misspretty at the third station. With pocket-sitter Tobins Brownie (Adam Merner) failing to fire, Trumps Girl only had one foe to beat and forged past Redland Misspretty by 1-1/2 lengths for the 1:55 score. More Than A Woman (Jason Hughes) flew up the rail for third.

Trumps Girl made her move to P.E.I. following her May 22 start at Northfield Park, joining the barn of David O’Brien for owner Tommy Collings of Mount Stewart, P.E.I. The five-year-old daughter of Always B Miki-Wind Damage Blues is two-for-three on the Island, bringing her 2026 record to four-for-17. She has earned $154,022 in 75 career starts and visited the winner’s circle 13 times. The win price was $2.90.

The card also featured another clash of the “big three” open trotters, with Flemsteen defeating Buckhead Ridge and Fight Song in the $8,000 Island Oceans Trot Series first leg. Fight Song (Jason Hughes) dropped in sixth with a three-way scrap forming up front as favoured Flemsteen (Ken Murphy) advanced three-high to the outside of Buckhead Ridge (Marc Campebell) between horses and longshot Rocket Blast (Corey MacPherson) at the cones. Buckhead Ridge won the battle for supremacy, and Flemsteen snuck into the pocket at the end of a :29 first panel. Fight Song (Jason Hughes) sprang out of sixth nearing the half in :59.1 and brought the fight to Buckhead Ridge, his archnemesis of the prior season, to three-quarters in 1:29.1. Fight Song waved the white flag at the top of the stretch, leaving the battle to Buckhead Ridge and the passing-lane-bound Flemsteen. Flemsteen produced :28 speed home, enough to collar a determined pacesetter by a half-length in a 1:57.2 score. Fight Song held third.

Flemsteen made an immediate impact upon arriving at Charlottetown from Ohio, breaking the all-age track record in his P.E.I. debut. The gelding is now five-for-14 this season with two wins in three starts on the Island. Jennifer Doyle trains the eight-year-old for Max Webster Stable of Inverness, N.S., Jeffrey Skinner of Hammonds Plains, N.S., Derrill Murphy of Lethbridge, Alta. and Clair Murphy of Millvale, P.E.I. The son of Explosive Matter-Lost Symbol has won 36 of his 155 career appearances and earned $848,894. He paid $2.90 to win.

Hallysgurl beat 2025 P.E.I.S.H.O.A. Trotter of the Year Little Louis in the $6,750 All Star Cresting Trot Series second leg to remain undefeated this season. Gilles Barrieau had the filly away third behind Big Rig (Mike McGuigan), who led through :30.2 and 1:00.2 early fractions before breaking stride on the third turn when challenged by West River Karuna (Ken MacDonald). Hallysgurl left the pylons with a head of steam going to three-quarters in 1:30.2, swept by pocket-sitter Little Louis and West River Karuna as they swung for home and comfortably held off a closing Little Louis to the line by 1-1/4 lengths in a career-best 1:58.4. West River Karuna finished third.

Hallysgurl is three-for-three as a sophomore with two wins in the All Star Cresting Trot Series for trainer Darryl MacLean and owner-breeders Calvin Larkin of Mermaid, P.E.I. and Erika Bradley of Charlottetown, P.E.I. The daughter of Muscle Mass-Incredible Hally now boasts a bankroll of $36,887 and seven career victories from 10 starts. She returned $2.20.

Sensational Gal ($2.10) and Freaky Fanny ($11.80) won the $6,000 divisions of the P.E.I. Colt Stakes Graduate Series Grassroots for Maritime-foaled or -sired four-, five- or six-year-old pacing mares. Sensational Gal was 4-1/2 lengths the best in 1:55.1 for driver Gilles Barrieau and trainer Nicholas Oakes in the first event, and Freaky Fanny took the second split by 2-1/4 lengths in 1:57 for trainer-driver Darren Crowe.
