Miki And Minnie Posts Track Record At Plainridge
Miki And Minnie followed up her statement victory in the Grade 1 Roses Are Red with a 1:49.1 track-record performance in the $38,732 Fillies and Mares Open Handicap Pace at Plainridge Park on Thursday, June 25.
The victory knocked two-fifths of a second off the record for four-year-old pacing mares that was lowered earlier on the card by 2025 Alberta Horse of the Year Custard Dolce. Brett Beckwith steered both of those winners and added a third track-record-setting drive on Thursday with Soho Spectre A in the sixth race.
Beckwith left from post five with Miki And Minnie and gradually worked her past Rocket Deo (Bradley Chisholm) through splits of :26.3 and :54.4, putting her on the front just past midway. Miki And Minnie hit three-quarters in 1:22.1 and had a three-length advantage at the top of the stretch. When they straightened out for home, Rocket Deo rushed from the pocket and made minor headway, but Miki And Minnie was relentless on the point and sealed the deal as a 2-1/4-length winner in 1:49.1, setting the new track mark for four-year-old pacing mares. Rocket Deo was second, followed by Ambushed (Matt Athearn).
Miki And Minnie took her 22nd career win from 30 starts and increased her bankroll to $2,915,820. Chris Ryder trains the 2025 Dan Patch Award winner, who is three-for-four this year, for owner-breeders Craig Henderson, Robert Mondillo and Lawrence Minowitz. The win price was the minimum $2.10.
Custard Dolce paced her record-setting mile in the opener, the $31,690 Fillies and Mares Open 2 Handicap Pace. The mare pushed to the fore for Beckwith entering the first turn, put up :26.3, :55 and 1:22.1 fractions, and kicked home in :27.2 for the 1:49.3 score. Swedish Starlet N (Matt Athearn) was second from the pocket, while Royally Hot (Kevin Swizter Jr.) closed for third. The clocking lowered the previous record of 1:50.2 set by Pure Cotton and Classicist in 2022.
Custard Dolce, trained by Jackie Greene for Kellogg Racing Stables LLC, scored her fourth win this season in 11 tries. The 2024 Alberta Sires Stakes champion, a daughter of Custard The Dragon-Blue Star West, is 20-for-32 lifetime with $451,924 in earnings. She paid $6 to win.
Soho Spectre A scored in 1:48.2 to lower the standard for older pacing geldings in a $35,211 conditioned event. The six-year-old son of Art Major-Delightful Jade sat the pocket through splits of :26, :55.3 and 1:20 and collared pacesetter Jackson Cooper (Bruce Ranger) late by a neck. Still Rollin N (Larry Stalbaum) came on late for show. The winning time took a fifth of a second off the previous record set by Alex Having Fun earlier this month. Beckwith piloted Soho Spectre A to the victory for trainer Enrico Robinson and owner Pollack Racing LLC. The gelding is four-for-20 this year and 15-for-57 lifetime with $376,854 in the coffers. He paid $4.40 to win.
For Once Inmy Life also put forth a sharp mile in the $38,732 Open Handicap Pace as he defeated the resident top-class pacers for the fifth time in five tries at The Ridge this year. Using the same strategy that achieved victory in his four previous seasonal outings in Massachusetts, For Once Inmy Life (Bruce Ranger) went right to the front and never looked back. After cutting fractions of :26, :54.2 and 1:21.4 with Catalpa Rescue A (Beckwith) tracking in the pocket, For Once Inmy Life extended his lead to 2-3/4 lengths and was all wrapped up late to win in a lifetime-best 1:48.4. Catalpa Rescue A finished second over Two Fold Cold (David Ingraham).
The winner’s share of the purse pushed the earnings of For Once Inmy Life ($3.20) to $697,198 lifetime. The six-year-old son of Downbytheseaside-Flyme To The Moon won for the 21st time in 68 career starts and improved to seven-for-14 this year. Cory Stratton trains him for Winters Racing Stable.
Beckwith won four of the day's 10 races, scoring with Chalk Hanover (1:51.3, $4.20) in addition to his three record-setters. Trainers Brett Pelling, Enrico Robinson and Cory Stratton each sent two stable members for win photos during the afternoon.
Racing resumes at Plainridge Park on Friday at 4 p.m.
