Fillies Flaunt It In Friday Baby Races At Mohawk
Woodbine Mohawk Park carded 11 two-year-old qualifiers on Friday, June 26 with pacing and trotting fillies in the spotlight.
Pacing filly Aceandaten kicked off the 11-dash qualifying session with a 1:53.3 performance to give her a share of the honours for fastest mile of the morning. Driver Doug McNair sent the daughter of Cattlewash-Dreamin Girl to the lead from post six and the filly flashed furious speed in her third seasonal effort. After fractions of :28.4, :56.4 and 1:25.4, Aceandaten paced home in :27.4 to hit the wire more than eight lengths better than Lyons Cariemontana (Scott Coulter). Island Girl (Jody Jamieson) rounded out the top three finishers.
Gregg McNair trains Aceandaten, a $70,000 London Classic purchase owned by Jason Castellan of Elora, Ont. The filly was bred by Tara Hills Stud Ltd. of Port Perry, Ont. and Bellevue Farms of Sagamore Beach, Ma.
Matching that speed badge in the seventh dash was Boardwalk Babe, a 1:53.3 winner in her second appearance of the season. Trevor Henry yielded the early lead in that qualifier to Twin B Mayreau (Tyler Jones) through a :28.4 opening quarter but looped quickly to the lead approaching the half. After swift middle fractions of :57 and 1:24, Boardwalk Babe held on to best Twin B Mayreau by a half length. Request Denied (Ed Hensley) finished in third.
A daughter of Sweet Lou from the accomplished Restive Hanover, Boardwalk Babe is trained by Matt Dupuis for owner Andrew Moore of Osgoode, Ont. The filly, bred by Winbak Farm of Chesapeake City, Md. was a $35,211 yearling purchased at Harrisburg.
Northern Song delivered the swiftest mile on the trotting side, connecting for her first winning effort in her second lifetime appearance.
Social Hour (Matt Bax) was in a hurry early, fronting the field by five at the :28.4 opening quarter. Mark Etsell bided his time with Northern Song in second, eventually getting to that Bax helmet by the 1:00.3 half. At that midway mark, Etsell asked Northern Song to step around the early leader and the trotting filly obliged to land on the lead going into the far turn. Posting three quarters in 1:29.4, Northern Song trotted home under no urging from her trainer-driver to trip the timer in 1:58.4. Social Hour finished second, 2-1/2 length in arrears, with Simea (James MacDonald) next best.
Etsell co-owns Northern Song (King Of The North-Choir Robe) along with Chuan Tan of Cambridge, Ont. and Harbor Racing Stable LLC of Uxbridge, Ont. The trio ponied up $70,423 to purchase the filly last fall at Harrisburg from breeder William Miller of Apple Creek, Oh.
