Track Record In Buffalo NYSS, Milestone For Gregory

Read The Room

Trotting colt Read The Room and driver Jeff Gregory both celebrated major achievements during New York Sire Stakes (NYSS) action on Wednesday, June 24 at Buffalo Raceway as the former set a track record and the latter reached a career milestone.

Read The Room crushed his three rivals by 9-1/2 lengths in the $80,141 first NYSS division for sophomore trotting males and reduced Buffalo's three-year-old colt trot mark with a 1:55 mile. He knocked more than a second off the previous standard of 1:56.2 set on June 6, 2018 by Purpose Blue Chip.

Starting from post two, Read The Room went immediately to the lead for trainer-driver Ake Svanstedt and set fractions of :29.1, :58 and 1:26.4. He had a 5-1/4-length advantage at three-quarters and just kept going in high gear for a dominant victory. Chapter Geo J (Jason Bartlett) was second and Lou Johns Action (Gregory) finished third.

Read The Room is two-for-five this season for owners Ake Svanstedt Inc., Little E LLC, B Nasstrom Holdings Inc. and Nils Munkhaugen. The son of Chapter Seven-Debra Hall has won four times in 14 career starts and has earned $225,754. He paid $2.38 to win.

In the $81,690 second division for the three-year-old male trotters, Jeff Gregory notched his 7,000th career driving victory as he sent his trainee, Highway Six, to a 1:56.4 win.

Sitting fifth and last as Titans Mischief (Matt Kakaley) set the :28.4 and :58.3 early fractions, Highway Six began his first-over trip before three-quarters in 1:28.1 and advanced around the clubhouse turn the second time. He pushed into contention on the final bend and rolled down the outside in the lane to catch Twin B Seven Sins (Niko Karna) for a half-length win. Seven Grand (Svanstedt) finished third.

Co-owned by Gregory and Jesmeral Stable, Highway Six recorded his second win in four outings this year. The 2025 New York County Fair champion, a son of Mets Hall-Highway Cash, is seven-for-10 lifetime and has earned $110,578. The win price was $6.42.

Gregory, who grew up in nearby Churchville, N.Y., now has 7,000 wins from 48,290 starts and $76.2 million in earnings. He recorded his first driving win in 1984 and enjoyed his greatest success in the 2000s, winning more than 400 races in a season five times. He had a career-high 581 victories in 2004 and was inducted into the United States Harness Writers Association Upstate New York Chapter's Hall of Fame in 2010.

The $81,690 first filly trot division was billed as a showdown between 2025 NYSS champion Sharp Seven and Breeders Crown winner Storybook Love, but Who Dares Wins added her name to the conversation with a gate-to-wire victory. Svanstedt made it an NYSS double as he piloted Who Dares Wins to the 1:56.3 score.

Who Dares Wins led through :30, :59 and 1:28.1 fractions and couldn't be caught down the lane as Sharp Seven (Bartlett) gained late but was a half-length shy. Storybook Love (Todd Ratchford) finished third after racing the final three-eighths uncovered.

Who Dares Wins was victorious in the NYSS for the first time in her career and moved to two-for-five on the campaign for trainer Svanstedt and owner Order By Stable. The daughter of Chapter Seven-Inspired By Life has earned $93,745 and won four times in 11 career starts. She returned $4.74 to win.

In the other $81,690 distaff bracket, Laurens Chapter swooped the group from fifth in 1:58.1, beating Overalls (Bartlett) by 3-1/2 lengths.

Driven by Niko Karna, Laurens Chapter trailed the five-horse cohort through :30 and :59.1 splits, started up uncovered going to three-quarters in 1:28.2, and rushed by all of her opponents by midway around the final turn. She opened up down the lane and cruised to a 1:58.1 victory. B Eyelash (Tyler Buter) rounded out the triactor.

Laurens Chapter earned her second career win in 12 starts, improving to one-for-five this year after taking one win in seven outings at two. She has earned $129,246. Noel Daley trains the Chapter Seven-A Hopeful Prayer filly for Patricia Stable & Laexpress, Sjoblom Racing & M. Dolan, Allister Stables LLC and Caviart Farms.

Five $28,169 divisions of the Excelsior Series also went forward on the card. In the brackets for the three-year-old colt-and-gelding trotters, Rubens ($11.54) was the fastest winner for trainer-driver Dan Daley, taking the second split in 1:57.3. Dws Cha Ching ($4.76) took a 1:59.3 win for driver Matt Kakaley and trainer Travis Alexander in the third division, while Self Portrait found the winner's circle in 2:01.3 for driver Drew Monti and trainer Melvin Straley and returned a hefty $30.48 in the first.

Bar Hall Beauty ($2.84) notched a 1:58.1 victory for Bartlett and trainer Nick Devita in the first filly group, and Sc Thats My Wife ($14.16) had her picture taken following a 2:00.3 win for trainer-driver Cory Stratton in the second.

Racing will return to Buffalo on Friday at 2:30 p.m. with 14 races slated.
