Century Komodo Makes A Splash In Qualifying Return
Open pacer Century Komodo was an impressive winner in his seasonal debut during Woodbine Mohawk Park's mixed Monday morning qualifying session on June 22 that included older horses and two-year-olds.
Trainer David Menary guided Century Komodo in the speedy pacer's return to action on a cool, rainy morning with track conditions listed as sloppy and two seconds off. In the morning's fifth qualifier, Century Komodo set fractions of :28.1, :57.2 and 1:24.4 en route to a 1:52.1 victory, with New Zealand import Helluva N (Louis-Philippe Roy) following 1-3/4 lengths behind in his second Canadian qualifying mile. It was a dozen lengths back to claiming pacer Tour Champion (Jody Jamieson).
A five-year-old Bettors Delight-Michelons Filly gelding, Century Komodo sports a career record reading 13-10-9 in 55 starts, with $310,518 in purses. Owned by Pennsylvania's Pollack Racing, he earned half of his career bankroll last year alone competing mostly in the top overnight ranks at Mohawk while picking up five of his wins. His last victory on Oct. 25 was his fastest mile to date in 1:48 flat and one of 17 race timed in sub-1:50 from his 25 outings in 2025.
North America Cup starter Redland Rocket Man (Louis-Philippe Roy) and his John Pentland stablemate Wholetthedogsout (Mark MacDonald) were one-two in a 1:53.4 tune-up mile ahead of upcoming Ontario Sires Stakes action to start the morning's session, with the former Bulldog Hanover son clocking a final quarter in :26.4.
A baby race for two-year-old trotters was held during Monday's session with Erinwood Trixton (Trixton-Angelina Hanover) finding his footing after a miscue in his first qualifier 10 days ago and winning in 2:01 in the slop with :29 on the end for driver Travis Henry. Trainer Mark Etsell shares ownership of the colt with Ontario-based partners Robert Newton, Dawn Burnett and Grant Turner.
