Shalom Hanover Sizzles Saturday At Mohawk
It's early in the season, but Shalom Hanover looks like the complete package so far.
A 1:57.3 winner on June 12 with trainer Dr. Ian Moore at the controls, Shalom Hanover matched the fastest mile time in North America by a two-year-old in 2026 with his 1:54 score on Saturday, June 20 during the session of baby races at Woodbine Mohawk Park.
Moore handed the lines over to driver Louis-Philippe Roy for Saturday's test, and Shalom Hanover showed his first appearance wasn't a one-and-done effort. Roy asked the son of Papi Rob Hanover-Matties Terror Girl to set the tempo, and the pacing colt willingly obliged through fractions of :28.4, :57.3 and 1:26.2 (three straight :28.4 panels) before powering home in :27.3. Callsign Maverick followed the leader and finished two lengths back in second for driver James MacDonald, with Wheels Up (Paul Davies) showing good pace late to round out the top three.
A $70,423 yearling purchase in Harrisburg, Shalom Hanover was bred by Hanover Shoes Farms Inc. of Hanover, Pa. and is now owned by an eponymous stable based out of Cambridge, Ont.
The fastest trotter during the Saturday session also came from the Dr. Ian Moore stable, but he's likely to tinker with Detonater Hanover after his Saturday outing.
A Hanover-bred son of Muscle Mass-Dancing Flames, Detonater Hanover watched Goldrush King (Roy) trip the first timer in :31.2 and then cleared to the top for driver Tyler Moore down the backside. After a half in 1:01, Detonater Hanover started to step away from his rivals around far turn. With three-quarters reached in 1:29, Detonater Hanover stepped away from his contemporaries by double digits approaching the wire but blew up and rolled offstride just before reaching the infield toteboard. He crossed the wire in 1:57.4, with R Northern Star (Doug McNair) charted at 11 lengths back in second and Goldrush King the best of the rest in third.
Purchased for $112,676 in Harrisburg on the same day as stablemate Shalom Hanover, Detonater Hanover is owned by Detonater Hanover Stable of Cambridge.
After winning all five of his drives at Mohawk on Friday, June 19, Doug McNair returned to the Campbellville, Ont. oval on the morning of Saturday, June 20 and scored five more victories during the session of baby races. Four of those victories came with trainees from his father Gregg's stable — pacers C Script (1:56.4), Yes I Am Hanover (1:56) and trotters Spiritual Guidance (2:04.2) and Honcho (1:59) — with Blake MacIntosh pupil Whiskey Stinger (1:57.1) rounding out the five-bagger. Whiskey Stinger is a Perfect Sting brother to 2021 Somebeachsomewhere Horse of the Year Desperate Man.
