Southwind Alamo, Skydiver Win Pocono Features
A pair of $21,528 conditioned trotting events for horses looking to ascend the class ladder was featured at Pocono Downs at Mohegan Pennsylvania as the local racing week concluded on Tuesday, June 16.
Good things seem on the horizon for the Tactical Landing-Amber Ella colt Southwind Alamo ($3.40), winner of the faster feature division in a new mark of 1:53.2. Johnathan Ahle moved the Ron Coyne Jr. trainee to the lead after the quarter, and the sophomore was fully in control from there, sprinting home in :56 - :27.3 while showing no exertion in a 5-3/4-length romp. Oversear (Matt Kakaley) closed for place over Caballero (Anthony Napolitano).
The partnership behind Southwind Alamo is Coyne & Pachuta Stable of Allentown, N.J., Blair Corbeil of Leduc, Alta., Richard Carney of Hartsdale, N.Y. and Mike McAllister of Beaumont, Alta. The colt is now two-for-six on the season and finished second in the Dexter Cup to Magic Punk, who finished second in the Grade 2 Goodtimes on Saturday. The colt took his fifth win in 17 career starts on Tuesday.
In the other section, driver Braxten Boyd got Skydiver ($5.40) out of a bad shuffle on the far turn, whereupon the son of Greenshoe-Ariana G angled wide and launched a furious rally from fifth at headstretch to win in 1:56. He snagged pacesetter Soeur Mary (Anthony Napolitano) by a half-length, with Cherokee Chief (Ridge Warren) flying home for third.
Laura Angle trains Skydiver for Howard Kaufman of Bryn Mawr, Pa. and Joshua Kaufman of Philadelphia, Pa. Skydiver, a five-year-old stallion, has won twice this year in seven outings and is five-for-31 lifetime.
George Napolitano Jr. drove three winners, two of them for the only trainer to double on Tuesday, Marc Mosher. The meet’s leading driver, Tyler Buter, also reported home first three times on the 12-race card. Simon Allard had a driving double.
The Wednesday-morning marathon continues at Pocono tomorrow with 19 qualifying races, 16 of them for two-year-olds. The next Pocono pari-mutuel card will take place Saturday at 1 p.m., with Pennsylvania Sire Stakes action for three-year-old pacing fillies including Loua Dipa, last year’s two-year-old Dan Patch champion and winner of the Fan Hanover final in her last start. Also entered is Miss Jum Jabber, winner of seven straight and conqueror of Loua Dipa in an earlier Sire Stakes event; the two have drawn into separate divisions Saturday.
