Plante Surpasses $20 Million In Earnings
Driver J.R. Plante breached $20 million in career earnings on the Monday (June 15) card at Woodbine Mohawk Park, scoring a win on the evening with Stickeminlethimgo before surpassing the milestone in the finale with a runner-up effort aboard Treasure The Day.
The Gerard Demers trained Stickeminlethimgo proved tough on the engine for Plante, taking down the $15,000 claiming pace. Plante put Stickeminlethimgo on the point from the outside post seven, leading to a quarter in :26.3 before settling things to the half in :55.1. Bettor B Going (Louis-Philippe Roy) took on the leader from the pocket on the far turn, dueling to three-quarters in 1:23.1 before Plante kept Stickeminlethimgo alive in the lane to fend off the challenger by a neck in 1:51.1.
After that, it was only fitting Plante surpassed the milestone aboard the Demers trained Treasure The Day in the $14,000 conditioned claiming finale. Unable to clear on the backstretch going first-over, Plante and Treasure The Day were game to the wire in a runner-up finish behind Coastline (Bob McClure) who sat off the early duel and scored the 1:51.3 victory.
It's the second milestone already this season for J.R. Plante, who also scored his 3,000th career victory exactly three months ago aboard a Gerard Demers trainee, Partyintheshadows. Plante began driving in 1999, and posted a career year in 2012 with 412 victories and $2.3 million in earnings. Returning to the sulky full-time in 2024, Plante notched 102 victories and $1.9 million in earnings in 2025. Plante is already on pace for those numbers in 2026, with 63 wins and $1,050,535 earned as of June 15. For his career, the Burlington, Ont., reinsman has won 3,027 of his 18,753 career drives, with his steers banking $20,002,281.
Also having a big Monday night at Mohawk was Team McNair, with trainer Gregg McNair conditioning three winners on the card, all driven by son Doug.
Walners Grove served as headliner for the trio, taking down a $19,000 conditioned trotting affair with a determined first-over grind. The 4-5 favourite landed in third in the early stages while Sherlyn Hanover (Louis-Philippe Roy) cut first-half fractions of :28 and :57.3. Walners Grove moved off the cones on the far turn from third with the tempo quickening to three-quarters in 1:25.3. Sherlyn Hanover appeared to have stolen it on the front, but Walners Grove continued to inch in to nail that foe by a neck on the wire in 1:54.1. Tahonta (Bob McClure) was third, just a half-length back in tight quarters along the pylons.
The clocking was a new career best for Walners Grove who has now won two of eight in her young career. The homebred three-year-old daughter of Walner-Goddess De Vie is owned by Ian Fleming of Londesborough, Ont.
The McNair barn's other two victories on the evening came with American Road Trip ($3.60, 1:53.1) and Yankee Boost ($5.40, 1:55.1).
