Monti Sweeps Opens, Wins Five At Buffalo
Drew Monti is quickly becoming Mr. Saturday Afternoon at Buffalo Raceway.
Last Saturday was a memorable one for Monti as he collected his 3,000th career driving win. This Saturday, June 13, he won five times on the 13-race program and swept both the $20,416 Open Pace and Open Trot events, both in gate-to-wire fashion.
In the Open Pace, Marvellous Mac A, after a pair of second-place finishes, righted the ship as he cut the mile, setting fractions of :28, :58 and 1:26.4. He led pocket-sitting Stormalong (Brett MacDonald) around the final turn and stayed strong down the lane for a career-best-equalling 1:55 victory by 1-1/2 lengths. Bet On Buter (Mike Whelan) was third.
Owned by Vogel & Wags Nags LLC, Team Rice Racing LLC and Dr. Michael Miller, the Maria Rice-trained Marvellous Mac A has now won four times in 13 starts on the season. The seven-year-old son of Roll With Joe-Glee Bromac is 16-for-75 lifetime and has earned $142,496. He paid $3.04 to win.
The Open Trot was another uneventful journey for Monti as he guided Valentine Express to an easy front-end victory. Starting from the rail, Valentine Express cruised through splits of :28.4, :58.1 and 1:27.2 en route to the 2-1/4-length nod over Shine All The Way (MacDonald). El Toro Loco (Kevin Cummings), the post-time favourite, was third.
Valentine Express is now three-for-11 this season for trainer Jerry Nugent Jr. and owner Rock 01 Stable Inc. The seven-year-old son of Chapter Seven-Cantata notched his 30th lifetime win from 143 starts and built his bankroll to $430,383. He paid $6.82 to win.
Monti was also aboard winners Dine With Kings ($12.28), Lip Reader A ($3.88) and Make My Deo ($2.64), the horse that gave him his 3,000th career victory last week. The reinsman has 104 wins at Buffalo this season, giving him a lead of 16 in the standings over second-placed Brett MacDonald.
Besides Monti's heroics, Kevin Cummings had a four-bagger and MacDonald won two races. Rice finished the card with two training wins.
Racing will continue at Buffalo on Wednesday with a 13-race program set. There's an $853 carryover in the Pick 5, which begins in the second race.
