Windemere Skye Equals Truro Record In Turner Stakes

Windemere Skye winning at Truro Raceway

Undefeated three-year-old pacing filly Windemere Skye stole the show in the Donnie & George Turner Memorial Stakes at Truro Raceway as the hot-handed Marc Campbell guided her to a track record victory on Friday, June 12.

The perfect filly trained by Earl Watts won the fastest of six $9,220 Turner Stakes divisions in 1:54.3 for her 14th straight victory. She equalled the track record for three-year-old pacing fillies co-held by Woodmere Skyroller (2020), Therealprincess (2022) and My Happy Place (2025).

Following up on her successful season's debut in the Atlantic Sires Stakes on May 24, Windemere Skye led at every call in the final filly division of the Turner Stakes, clearing to command through a :28 quarter then carving out middle splits of :57.2 and 1:26 en route to the 2-1/4-length tally over Elm Grove Uncannie (Ken Murphy) and Alwaysinfullforce (Gilles Barrieau). The heavy 1-9 favourite paid $2.10 to win, with no place or show wagering offered.

Bred by Windemere Farms of Springvale, P.E.I. and owned in partnership with Matt Burke of Stratford, P.E.I., the Somewhere Fancy-Howmac Missy filly increased her lifetime earnings to $142,507.

Marc Campbell led all drivers for wins on the 14-race card and George Rennison topped the trainers, each with five visits to victory lane. They teamed up for four of their wins, including a Turner Stakes division for the colts with 1-2 favourite Tobins Gem going first-over against pacesetter Goose Commander (Jason Hughes) through the final half-mile before drawing 2-1/4 lengths clear at the end for a new lifetime mark of 1:56.1. P H Lover Boy (Gillies Barrieau) inherited the show position when Shekhan (Colin Sheppard) was placed for failing to lose ground while on a break when crossing the wire in third. Tobins Gem, a gelded son of Flameproof Hanover and Grace Seelster, is now four-for-eight for Rennison Racing Inc. of Truro, N.S.

The earlier filly divisions were won by Uptown Tonight and Staggerette while Sporty Anthony and Cattle Call took the other colt divisions.

Uptown Tonight fought off all challengers to win by a neck, lowering her mark to 1:57.4 for driver Myles Heffernan Sr. and trainer/owner Myles Heffernan Jr. of Summerville, P.E.I. The Tobago Cays-JJ Macie miss is now two-for-six in her sophomore season after going winless in 10 outings as a freshman. Saulsbrook Carly (Ken Murphy) and Mattnificient Rose (Darren Crowe) were second and third in the close finish. The winner survived a judges inquiry after going inside one pylon at the top of the stretch.

Staggerette fronted a field scratched down to four, winning in 1:58.2 for trainer/driver Corey MacPherson. The daughter of Stag Party-Done Fooln Witcha cleared Bakers Dozen (Paul Langille) at the quarter pole and kept that one at bay by a length, with Mrs Gallant (Ken Murphy) taking the show dough. The lightly raced filly is just a neck shy of a perfect record in her first seven starts. She is owned by Kickin Horse Stable of Stratford, P.E.I., William Andrew of Calgary, Alta., and Kristy Andrew of Charlottetown, P.E.I.

Sporty Anthony, driven by Ken Murphy, was the fastest colt division winner as he ducked to the inside from the pocket to defeat Zero Two Sixty (Marc Campbell) by half a length in a career-best 1:55.1, with first-over challenger Darvies Fancy (Paul Langille) levelling off in third. Jason Biggar trains the Somewhere Fancy-Southwind Ion gelding and shares ownership with breeder Jason Williams of McNeills Mills, P.E.I. The Atlantic Breeders Crown and Maritime Breeders Stakes freshman champion earned his first sophomore win in his second seasonal start. He now has five victories from 11 career starts.

Cattle Call, driven by Gilles Barrieau for trainer Ron Matheson, won the final colt division in 1:56.1 by half a length, holding off the passing lane plunge of Windemere Britt (Paul Langille) and fighting off Smilin With Lou (Corey MacPherson), who stuck a head in front briefly heading into the final turn. Off to a perfect start this season in his first three races, the Cattlewash-Bolero Tallia gelding improved his career record to five wins in nine starts for owner Friends And Family Stable of Nine Mile Creek, P.E.I.

In regular racing action, Risky Bizz Group's veteran pacer American Risk was a repeat winner in Truro's $2,500 Winners Over class as part of the Campbell-Rennison highlight reel. The 10-year-old pacer notched his 55th career victory, scoring in 1:54.2 by 2-1/2 lengths over Income Approach (Keith Legge) with Bronx Drifter (Clare MacDonald) rounding out the top three.
