Lady Devine Upsets In Kent Oakes Memorial
Lady Devine delivered a 15-1 surprise in the Kent Oakes Memorial on Thursday, June 4 at Red Shores Racetrack and Casino at the Charlottetown Driving Park, getting up in the final strides to win the $6,000 feature.
Brady Sweet engineered the winning trip in the Fillies and Mares Preferred Pace-class event behind Lady Devine for trainer Jennifer Doyle, who co-owns the mare with Max Webster Stable of Inverness, N.S. The five-year-old daughter of Heston Blue Chip-Booty Call sat second behind Windemere Saddy (Ken Murphy) through fractions of :28, :57.3 and 1:26.2, then reached up late to win by a nose in 1:55.1. Windemere Saddy had to settle for second while favourite Rosetown Mary (Corey MacPherson) rallied hard for third.
Lady Devine is now three-for-eight this year and 25-for-89 lifetime with $80,189 in earnings. She paid $32.80 to win.
The $4,650 Fillies and Mares Preferred 3 Pace in Race 10 went to Tobins Brownie ($3.40) as the Adam Merner trainee cut it all out and held on by a head in 1:57.1. Merner was in the bike behind the eight-year-old Stonebridge Terror-Putnam Mackenzie mare for owners Brittany Watts and Sandra Weeks of Springvale, P.E.I. Shake N Blake (Ken Murphy) was second with a flying Saulsbrook Pika (MacPherson) third in the tight finish. Merner also won Race 6 with Tobins Cover Girl ($15.40), scoring in 1:57.3 from his own barn for owners Cory Livingston of Village Green, P.E.I. and Max Sehl of Port Morien, N.S.
Staggerette ($7.20) was a sharp winner in Race 11 as Corey MacPherson placed the sophomore Stag Party-Done Fooln Witcha filly into contention, then guided her home to win by 1-3/4 lengths in a new lifetime best of 1:55.3. MacPherson also trains her for the Kickin Horse Stable of Stratford, P.E.I., William Andrew of Calgary, Alta. and Kristy Andrew of Charlottetown, P.E.I. Mysterious Ways (Jason Hughes) was second with Into The Maelstrom (Murphy) third.
Joy Of My Life ($23.30) closed out the program with a front-end upset for driver Zac Noye and trainer Jay Noye. The six-year-old daughter of Stay Hungry-Wishesdocometrue put up the fractions before stopping the clock in 1:56.2, winning by three-quarters of a length for William Andrew of Calgary, who shares ownership with Zac and Jay Noye. Sensational Gal (Gilles Barrieau) was second while Redland Peaches (MacPherson) completed the triactor. The victory triggered a $1,478.24 Pick 4 and a $1,042.19 High 5 payout for 20-cent bets.
Three-year-old Muscle Mass-Incredible Hally filly Hallysgurl ($6.10) won the second-race trot in 1:59.1 for driver-trainer Darryl MacLean and owners Calvin Larkin of Mermaid, P.E.I. and Erika Bradley of Charlottetown. Island newcomer Ninety Proof (Barrieau) was second best by three lengths as the post time favourite while Emberlees Rocket (Marc Campbell) finished third.
Alwaysinfullforce ($2.10) was much the best in Race 9, wiring her rivals in 1:57.4 for Barrieau and trainer Mike McGuigan. The sophomore Force N Fury-Toujours filly is owned and was bred by Jamie Whalen of Vernon River, P.E.I. Uptown Tonight (Myles Heffernan Sr.) was two lengths back in second with Electraflying (MacLean) third. McGuigan also won with Lila Berry ($12.90) in the fifth race, with MacPherson piloting the filly for Little Pond Stables of Little Pond, P.E.I.
The total handle on the night was $101,111. Live racing continues on Saturday at 6 p.m. at Red Shores Charlottetown.
