Spaaaanzano On Top At The Spa

Spaaaanzano winning at Saratoga Raceway

Spaaaanzano took top honours in the $25,000 Open Trot on Monday (June 1) at Saratoga Raceway, meanwhile trainers Gary Levine and Rob Harmon each recorded hat tricks on the Monday card.

Spaaaanzanogot away third with driver Kyle Swift while Ordained (Billy Dobson) took command of the field of six to an opening quarter of :27.4. Ordained remained in control to the half in :57.4 before Spaaaanzano came to call first-over and to the leader's wheel at three-quarters in 1:26.2. The two slugged it out from there, with Spaaaanzano getting the better of Ordained late to win by a neck in 1:55.1. Dealin With Dewey (Wally Hennessey) was third, 1-3/4 lengths back of the leader.

Jackie Greene trains Spaaaanzano, a five-year-old gelded son of Coraggioso-Grace N Charlie. The career winner of $960,170 is owned by Kellogg Racing Stable of Queensbury, NY.

Gary Levine, a former training champ at the Spa, added three wins to his bulky 2026 tally when trotters Rina Labelle and Full Scale repeated to join Levine stable newbie Dojea Gingerale in recording Monday victories.

Rob Harmon brought a quartet of invaders to town for the matinee and scored a trio of wins. Trotters Memento Mori and Uncle Rat overcame difficult journeys to secure Monday scores while young pacer Bee Perfect (Chris Long) registered her first career win breaking her maiden in 1:59 by the slimmest of margins after enduring a first-over trip.

The Levine trio of winners was piloted to their scores by Jimmy Devaux who went wire-to-wire for each of the victories. Harmon utilized the driving services of Chris Long for his wins with Uncle Rat and Bee Perfect while current leading driver Kyle Swift sat behind Memento Mori who completed the hat trick on the day for Harmon.

Live racing continues on Tuesday with a matinee that begins at 12 p.m.
