Dewey Arnold Takes Vernon Open Double
Dewey Arnold repeated his front-stepping score from a week ago as he won his second straight $11,806 Open Handicap Trot at Vernon Downs on Saturday, May 30.
He went straight to the front for Leon Bailey and led to the quarter in :26.4, half in :56.3 and three-quarters in 1:25.2. Eventual second-place finisher Forty Gs (Roman Lopez) made late gains, but Dewey Arnold was too strong and won by 1-1/2 lengths in 1:54.1. Duke Lavictoire (Steeven Genois) finished third.
Dewey Arnold is now three-for-14 this season for trainer Dave Dewhurst, who shares ownership with Philip Hale. The eight-year-old Deweycheatumnhowe-Livn On A Prayer gelding went three-for-three in Vernon Opens last year and has not lost at the class since 2024. Saturday's win was his 45th lifetime in 131 starts. His backers received $2.88.
Bailey and Jimmy Whittemore each had driving hat tricks on the 13-race card.
Vernon Downs will host its next card on Friday, June 5 with a first post of 5:05 p.m.
