Road To The Hambletonian - Week 4

Apex winning at Woodbine Mohawk Park

Dan Patch Award winner Apex remains the top ranked Hambletonian contender in the fourth week of the "Road to the Hambletonian."

The Walner-Mission Brief colt rallied to win his Meadowlands qualifier on May 22 in 1:53.3 with a :26.1 final quarter.

“He qualified very well and we’re aiming for the second leg of [New Jersey Sire Stakes] next Friday [June 5],” said trainer Marcus Melander.

Big Ranger moved up to fifth in Top 10 rankings after his Scioto Downs track record performance of 1:51.2 in an Ohio Sire Stakes on May 25 for trainer/driver Ronnie Gillespie.

“I did tell the owners, not this start, but the next start, if he can’t trot in [1]:51 comfortable, I wouldn’t take him to the [Hambletonian]. But he did it real comfortable tonight," said Gillespie after the win. "So my goal is to see how well he can do it off the pace. He’s going to have to come off the pace to race with those Grand Circuit horses.”

American Power moved up to sixth following his New Jersey Sire Stakes Platinum win for Melander. Svanstedt’s Nebbiolo lands at No. 10 after dominating in his three-year-old Bunker Hill Trot debut.

The rankings are compiled by Meadowlands Racetrack's Ken Warkentin each week leading up to the 101st Hambletonian (Grade 1), which will take place on Saturday, Aug. 8 at The Meadowlands.
