Tuis Angel winning at Tioga Downs

Trotting mare Tuis Angel and pacing mare Sweet Hayley Jane A were victorious despite outside starting spots in a pair of Open Handicaps at Tioga Downs on Sunday, May 24.

In the $19,444 Open Trot, Tuis Angel ($10.28), driven by Jim Taggart Jr., trailed a field of six through the first half-mile then came flying three-wide down the lane to secure her second straight Tioga win and third in a row in 1:55.3. Owned by trainer David West and his Pennsylvania partners Pamela Kimmel and James Rappold, the five-year-old Andover Hall-Tui mare prevailed by a quarter of a length over Purple Lord (Jim Pantaleano) and Enola (Mike Merton).

In her Tioga debut in the $20,833 Fillies & Mares Open Pace, Sweet Hayley Jane A ($2.88) made a backstretch blitz to take the lead and cruised to an easy win in 1:55.3. The six-year-old Sweet Lou-Tacthayleysdelight mare, a winner in three of her last four starts, is trained by Heidi Cushing and owned by driver Ron Cushing in partnership with Michigan's Kevin Sywyk. Quarrel (Mike Merton) was second best, finishing nearly four lengths behind, and Tennis Queen (Jim Pantaleano) finished third.
