Game On! Hennessy Trainees Face Off In Preferred
Outlaw Game On took on stablemate Shark Week in the $15,500 Preferred Pace and came out on top for the hot Rod Hennessy stable on Friday, May 22 at Century Downs.
Shark Week looked like a winner with Mike Hennessy rocking in the race bike around the final turn to shake off the 9-5 favoured backstretch challenger Midnight Mover until Outlaw Game On shot through at the pylons down the lane to defeat his stablemate in 1:52.3 in rein to Logan Gillis.
Shark Week had left from post five and cleared insider Outlaw Game On into a sizzling :26.3 opening quarter before Midnight Mover and James Jungquist put on the pressure through a :55.2 half and three-quarters in 1:23.1. Midnight Mover held on for third.
Outlaw Game On improved his seasonal scorecard to 2-3-1 in nine Preferred starts. The five-year-old Smart Shark-Sobia Hanover gelding now has 11 career wins and more than $120,000 in purse earnings from 59 starts. He paid $6.60 to win.
Outlaw Game On is owned by his trainer and Lorne Duffield of Edmonton, Alta. -- both also co-owners of the runner-up -- along with Five C Stable of Cranbrook, B.C., and Jason Clouston of Okotoks, Alta.
Rod Hennessy also sent out a pair of winners earlier on the card, both driven by his son Mike. The $300,000-earning mare Byby Baby Byby was a 1:54 winner and the multiple stakes-placed sophomore colt Vegas Gangster had to share his first career victory in a 1:58.1 dead heat with Hello Dragon, trained and driven by Nathan Sobey.
Sobey also had a training triple, which was completed by four-year-old pacer Take Out Hanover battling overland to a tough 1:55.2 triumph and last year's Western Canada Pacing Derby champion Hands Off Harry getting back into the win column as he shot up the inside off a perfect pocket trip in his own 1:55.2 mile.
