Archie McNeil Passes
Longtime harness racing industry participant Archibald “Archie” John McNeil, of Westborough, Mass. passed away peacefully with his loving family by his side on Thursday, May 14, 2026, in Worcester Fairlawn Rehabilitation Hospital at the age of 80.
Archie was born in Lower Sackville, N.S., the son of the late Malcolm and Jean (Morrison) McNeil. After graduating from high school, Archie was involved in the Standardbred horse industry, owning, training and driving harness horses for many years. His career in racing brought him to many racetracks in Canada and across the United States. He remained an active owner up until his death.
He also dedicated more than 35 years to the Animal Health industry, working closely with equine veterinarians. He was employed by Bimeda Animal Health up until his passing. The same qualities that made Archie a beloved horseman in the Standardbred industry – his sense of humour and integrity – also made him highly regarded among veterinary customers, colleagues and friends throughout the industry.
Upon hearing of Archie’s passing, Dr. Mike Ross reflected, “There was only one Archie. Whenever you saw him, he made everyone around him feel better.”
Archie is survived by his loving wife of 35 years, Kathleen M. (Hogan) McNeil of Westborough, his son and daughter-in-law, Donald and Heather McNeil of Coronada, Ca., and his two granddaughters, Lauren of Washington, D.C., and Abigail of Coronada, Ca. He also leaves behind his sister, Lorraine Brookbank of Lower Sackville, N.S., his brother-in-law, Paul Chambers of Cape Charles, Va., several nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews as well as many extended family and friends.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his sister Wilma Chambers and his brother Steven McNeil.
Following cremation, private services will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the charity of your choice in Archie's honour.
“There are horses in Heaven. And thank the Lord for that.”
Please join Standardbred Canada in offering condolences to the family and friends of Archie McNeil.
Condolences
Sincere condolences to Kathy, Archie's family and friends from the McKibbin Family.
I was blessed to work with Archie for many years and more importantly call him a friend. There was never any doubt how important his family was to him. He was a friend to so many who will be fondly remembered and deeply missed. Drive on my friend.
