But Why recorded his fourth Open Trot victory of the season on Monday (May 18) afternoon when the defending Horse of the Year at Saratoga Casino Hotel went coast-to-coast in the $24,658 feature.

Reinsman Jimmy Devaux moved But Why out to the early lead where he cruised unopposed through first-half fractions of 27.4 and 57.2. The even-money favourite looked strong every step of the way and opened up a bit past three-quarters in 1:26.1 before putting the finishing touches on his fourth seasonal score stopping the timer in 1:55.1. Last week’s Open winner Ordained (Billy Dobson) closed well to be second while Platinum As (Aaron Byron) came on to finish third. 

Scott Mongeon trains the five-year-old But Why who has followed up his award-winning campaign with a strong 2026 season in which he has hit the board in all eight starts including his four Open scores. The Crazy Wow-Porque gelding is owned by Steve and Laura Stewart of Petersburgh, NY.
