Usain Hanover Dashes To Mohawk Open Victory
A $40,000 Open Trot served as the headliner on a 10-race Monday (May 18) card at Woodbine Mohawk Park, with Usain Hanover bolting to the lead in the early stages and proving to quick for his foes to repeat at the top level with Louis-Philippe Roy aboard.
Hasty Bid (James MacDonald) was quickest off the wings in the field of seven, crossing over against the cones in command before relinquishing control to Usain Hanover who raced to his outside at the quarter in :27.3. The 2-1 second choice cleared before going unchallenged to the half in :56 before hammering the throttle entering the far turn and extending his lead to 3-1/4 lengths at the three-quarter pole in 1:23.1.
Usain Hanover cut the corner and made his way for home well clear before Hasty Bid began to close the gap in the lane. Despite the late rally, Hasty Bid would come up a length shy on the wire as Usain Hanover stopped the timer in a new personal best of 1:51.1. Ghostly Casper (Mark MacDonald) finished in the third spot, 7-1/2 lengths behind the winner.
A winner in three of his last four, David Menary trains Usain Hanover for owner Pollack Racing of Venetia, PA. The five-year-old Bar Hopping-Up Front Hotsey gelding is a 17-time winner in his career, banking $466,061 lifetime.
