Florida Guy Wins In Mohawk Feature Thriller

Florida Guy

The feature-race trotters put on a show for the large Family Night crowd at Woodbine Mohawk Park on Sunday, May, 17, with Florida Guy emerging a head in front in a five-horse photo for win in the $22,000 conditioned event for five-year-olds and younger.

Florida Guy, coming off a career-best win at the same level a week ago, was second off the car behind lukewarm choice Maximum Exposure (Travis Henry), then was relegated to third as Greenarrow Hanover (Travis Cullen) drove on to the top past a :28 first quarter. With the outer flow in motion at the half in :57.2, Trevor Henry slid Florida Guy off the cones and marched him up to the leader’s wheel as they sped to through three-quarters in 1:26, leaving second-over One Belle (Matt Bax) and pocket-sitter Maximum Exposure gapped off into the stretch.

Florida Guy chipped away at Greenarrow Hanover while drifting out down the lane, opening a path between horses for Maximum Exposure as One Belle closed on the outside, Hercules (J.R. Plante) surged widest of all and Anibal Duharas (Tyler Borth) slipped through a gap late. With Florida Guy and Maximum Exposure leading the battle royale into the final strides, Florida Guy edged out that rival and outlasted the cavalry charge to prevail by a head in 1:54. Hercules flew for second, with One Belle third. The top five were covered by a neck at the line.

Florida Guy, winless in his first 11 starts this year, has won back-to-back outings in lifetime-best clockings. Katarina Bosnjak trains the four-year-old son of Alarm Detector-Southwind Champane for Jjs Stables of Grand Valley, Ont. The gelding is now six-for-25 lifetime and has earned $87,480. He paid $8.90 to win.

The annual Family Night at Mohawk featured a host of kids’ activities and concessions, an LED light show and the usual fireworks display.
