Blood Money Streaks On In Charlottetown Preferred
Blood Money continued to toy with the competition as he took his sixth straight win with another dominant performance in the $6,250 Preferred Handicap Pace on Saturday, May 16 at Red Shores Racetrack and Casino at the Charlottetown Driving Park.
The Ron Matheson-trained Blood Money ($2.20) was all business from post five for driver Gilles Barrieau, blasting to the lead and controlling every station in the feature. The 10-year-old son of Sweet Lou-Blood Diamond laid down fractions of :27.4, :56.1 and 1:24.2 before pacing home a 1-1/2-length winner in 1:52 for owner Dr. Mitchell Downey of Saint John, N.B. Twin B Tuffenuff (Corey MacPherson) sat the pocket throughout and finished second while Nuttin But Finesse (Mike Downey) rounded out the triactor.
Blood Money has won six of seven starts on the season, including four in a row in the Charlottetown Preferred since returning from a three-month layoff in April. He is now 39-for-153 lifetime with $524,061 in earnings.
The win was the fastest victory on record by a free-legged pacer in the history of Atlantic Canadian harness racing. The time unseated the 1:52.1 record set by Hot Deuce in a 2017 Governor’s Plate elimination at Red Shores Summerside, Beachin Lindy from Old Home Week 2022 and Wind Blown in September 2025 at Charlottetown.
The Earl Watts stable doubled up on the 12-race card. The Watts-trained Starship Sharky ($3.40) won the fourth race by eight lengths for driver Adam Merner and owner-breeder Claude Poirier in 1:58.1, and Starship Glyde ($3.60) drew away to a 6-1/2-length victory in the finale in 1:55.4 for driver Paul Langille and owner Windemere Farms of Springvale, P.E.I.
Corey MacPherson scored a quadruple on the evening. He won the second race with Woodmere Bullet ($9.60) from the Jamie Smith barn in 1:58.2, the third with Tahoe Seelster ($13.80) in 1:58.3 for trainer Tom Weatherbie, the sixth with Th Spikey Mikey ($6.10) from his own barn with a 1:56.4 mile and the 10th with Bohannon ($12.20) for conditioner Carson Wilkie in a 1:59.2 clocking.
Brigus ($20) sprung the biggest upset of the night in Race 8 for trainer Nick Oakes and owner Milton Young. Ken Murphy sent the Betterthancheddar-Bachata Hanover gelding directly to the front, and the five-year-old refused to yield, holding off heavy favourite Fast Louie (David Dowling) in 1:54.3. Hunters Hero (Landon Campbell) completed the ticket.
Live racing continues on Monday at 12:30 p.m. with the season opener at Red Shores Summerside.
