World Record For Skywalker Sea; Miller Hits 11,000 Wins

Skywalker Sea winning at Scioto Downs

Scioto Downs hosted a night of headline-worthy performances on Friday, May 15 as Skywalker Sea turned in a world record performance, driver Brett Miller became just the 15th driver in North America to reach the 11,000-win mark, and Open trotter Oh Look Magic pushed his current win streak into double-digit territory.

Skywalker Sea flashed world record speed during the action-packed 15-race card, winning the evening's ninth race, a $22,603 fillies and mares conditioned optional claiming pace.

Skywalker Sea tracked the favoured Beautiful Seaside (Trevor Smith) through wicked fractions of :26, :53.1 and 1:20 before popping the pocket and forging ahead in a :27.2 final-quarter slugfest for her first sub-1:50 score. Her 1:47.3 winning time was a new world record for four-year-old pacing mares on a five-eighths-mile track, shaving two-fifths of a second off Somwherovrarainbow's mark that stood since May 2014. Beautiful Seaside settled for second 1-1/2 lengths behind while Jillian B Miki (Chris Page) finished eight lengths back in third.

A daughter of Downbytheseaside out of Pet Walker, Skywalker Sea is trained by Todd Luther and owned by Greg Luther Racing of Blacklick, Ohio. The multiple Kentucky and Ohio stakes winner, who finished less than a length behind dead heat winners The Last Martini and Miki And Minnie in last year's Breeders Crown, has earned nearly $560,000 lifetime.

Miller's milestone moment came after his third win on the card in the fourth race, a $27,397 conditioned optional claiming trot, when he guided favourite Vekna to the front after being parked past a contested quarter then opened up daylight on the field. The four-year-old Enterprise-Rare Book gelding, who is trained by Kayne Kauffman and owned by Natalie Kauffman of Lebanon, Ohio, won in a new mark of 1:52 flat.

Miller, who drove his first winner in 1992 at Northfield Park, posted a career-best year in 2004 when he won 639 races. He's topped 500 wins in a single season five other times, including most recently in 2019. The resident of Columbus, Ohio has driven in more than 68,200 races with his mounts earning more than $135 million in purses.

Later in the evening's featured $36,986 Open Handicap Trot, the Ron Burke-trained Oh Look Magic overcame his outside post assignment, racing three-wide while parked past the :27.3 quarter mark to gain control and never looked back. Driven by Chris Page, the streaking millionaire trotter maintained a clear lead through middle splits of :57.1 and 1:25.2 en route to the 1:53.1 triumph ahead of the first-up Adamsville Road (Sam Widger) and pocket-pursuer Battle Hill (Marvin Luna), who finished in a dead heat for second.

Oh Look Magic has not lost a race since Jan. 29, winning 10 in a row while competing in Open company at Miami Valley Raceway, The Meadows and Scioto Downs. The six-year-old Lookslikeachpndale-Miami Magic gelding is owned by Burke Racing Stable of Fredericktown, Pennsylvania and Weaver Bruscemi of Canonsburg, Pennsylvania.
