Ungawa Remains In Rhythm At Mohawk
Ungawa hasn't missed a beat in now each of his last three, as the red-hot four-year-old took down the $24,000 conditioned trotting feature on Monday's (May 11) Woodbine Mohawk Park card with trainer Paul MacDonell in the bike.
Nine trotters who were non-winners of five or $80,00 lifetime lined up for the event with Ungawa leaving from the far outside as the 3-1 second choice. Ungawa took flight off the wings, quickly crossing over against the cones and asserting himself on top at the quarter in :27.4. Ungawa went unchallenged to the half in :56.2 before leading to three-quarters in 1:25 while the 2-5 favourite, Mr Walner Fashion (Scott Young), trotted first-over and into fourth with 4-1/2 lengths still to make up.
Ungawa cut the corner sharply, opening up by nearly three lengths midway through the stretch while Mr Walner Fashion drove into second. With a statuesque MacDonell in the bike, Ungawa coasted to the wire two lengths clear in a career best 1:53.1. Mr Walner Fashion held for second over a hard-charging Eurobank Hanover (Tyler Jones), who rallied for third.
Owned by the Estate of Dale Towle of Leamington, Ont., Ungawa has won three of five in 2026, with each of those victories coming consecutively. The Greenshoe-The Power Of Many gelding has won six of 15 lifetime, banking $78,780 for his career.
